Police: Drunken driver accused of hit-and-run spree

He was arrested after a witness to 3rd accident gave chase

PoliceBlotterA Berwyn man is in custody, police said, after a witness to his third, drunken hit-and-run crash on Wednesday gave chase and held him down.

Police from the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department said they responded to the area of Paoli Pike in East Goshen Township at 1:06 p.m. to search for a black Nissan X-Terra that was wanted for a hit-and-run accident in West Goshen Township on Paoli Pike at Ellis Lane.  A witness said the striking vehicle was last seen at Paoli Pike and North Chester Road and gave officers the registration number, police said.

A second hit-and-run report came in at 1:11 p.m., sending Westtown-East Goshen police to North Chester Road near Highland Avenue in East Goshen Township, police said. There, officers found a black Nissan X-Terra with the same license plate number overturned in the woods off the roadway.  Several witnesses said the driver had climbed out of the vehicle and fled on foot, police said.

Checking the area, officers found a citizen holding down Steve C. Jahn, 31, along Highland Avenue. The citizen said that he had chased Jahn from the crash scene and that Jahn threatened him and refused to stop running so he tackled him, police said. Jahn, the registered owner of the Nissan, displayed injuries consistent with the motor-vehicle crash and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, police said.

While processing Jahn on the charges, which included driving under the influence and leaving an accident scene, police said they received another report of a hit-and-run accident. It occurred just before the crash on Paoli Pike and Boot Road, and the victim reported being rear-ended by a black Nissan X-Terra that fled the scene, police said.
