Police ID Westtown pedestrian killed last week

76-year-old woman was crossing Paoli Pike when she was struck by car

Image 1A 76-year-old Westtown Township woman who died on Sunday, April 6, of injuries she sustained after being hit by a car in front of East Goshen Township Park has been identified as Helen Athanas, a Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department news release said on Friday, April 11.

The release said officers who responded to the reported accident at 11:42 a.m. in the 1600 block of Paoli Pike in East Goshen Township, found the victim lying along the side of Paoli Pike with serious injuries. The male driver of a 2013 Toyota Prius that struck the woman, an 83-year-old West Chester resident, stopped immediately and remained at the accident scene to speak with police, the release said.

Athanas was transported to Paoli Hospital, where she was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident, the release said. Police have determined that Athanas had been walking with a family member at the East Goshen Park and decided to return to the family vehicle.  The victim was crossing Paoli Pike in an area that was not designated as a crosswalk to return to the park when she was struck by the westbound Toyota Prius, the release said.

The accident remains under investigation by the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department and any witnesses are urged to call the department at 610-692-5100.
