Ailment apparently prompts multi-vehicle crash

Driver hit other vehicles, tree, and pole, police said

Image 1A 56-year-old Delaware man suffered a medical problem before causing a multi-vehicle accident on Rt. 202 on Monday, police said.

Members of the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department on patrol in the 1100 block of Wilmington Pike in Westtown Township at 12:26 p.m. said a northbound Ford Edge collided with two other northbound vehicles on Wilmington Pike before the entrance to Westtown Village Shopping Center.

After hitting the two vehicles, the Ford Edge traveled over a curb and collided with a large tree, a parking lot light pole, and four unoccupied vehicles parked in the lot of the Westtown Branch of TD Bank, police said.

The driver of the Ford Edge, who was not identified but lives in Claymont, De., was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated by members of Fame Fire Company and then transported to Paoli Hospital by members of Good Fellowship Ambulance and Chester County Hospital Medic 91.

Police said the driver appeared to suffer “a medical event” before the collision.  No other individuals were injured as a result of this accident and TD Bank remained open during the accident investigation.  Police said a TD employee extinguished a small fire under the hood of the Ford Edge before Fame Fire Company arrived.

The Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department said it was assisted by Fame Fire Company, West Chester Fire Police, Good Fellowship Ambulance, Medic 91 and Thornton’s Towing.
