Police warn of ‘sheriff’ telephone scam

Caller threatens arrest if residents don’t cooperate

wwpd patchWest Whiteland Township Police want to warn residents about a telephone scam in the area.  A caller, identifying himself as a ‘sheriff’, contacted a residence and accused the family of not having paid taxes.  He informed the call recipient the family was about to be arrested unless they cooperated, and then asked questions regarding personal identification of household members.  He made reference to the family being of Indian descent and even spoke briefly in Hindi.

The call suddenly ended, either by the caller hanging up, or by an interruption in service.  This incident resembles other recent events in the metropolitan area.  Residents are cautioned about giving out personal information over the phone.  Before providing anything, insist on the caller’s full name, affiliation, and callback number.  Hang up and call your local law enforcement agency to file a report and verify the legitimacy of the caller.

Thanks for the heads up! It’s the same scam I read about at Callercenter.com where the caller purportedly came from Fort Worth, TX. The complaints revealed that the scammer basically used the same script.
