NEW GARDEN — Township police charged a Downingtown man with embezzling some $18,000 from Modern Mushroom, while serving as the company’s payroll manager.

Police said they began investigating Deseon Eggleston, 33, after Modern Mushroom contacted them with a report of employee theft on Jan. 9.

Police said that issues turned up during an internal fiscal audit which suggested a series of financial thefts over a period of months. Police said that Eggleston created an employee account with fake supporting documents. Once the fictitious employee was created, Eggleston paid the fictitious employee more than $18,000, which police said went into his personal bank account.

On Friday, Jan. 23, investigators obtained a criminal arrest warrant for Eggleston,  who was arrested during a routine traffic stop the following day.

Eggleston was taken into custody without incident and arraigned before Judge Hines at Magisterial District Court 15-1-03 in Coatesville. Eggleston was released on unsecured bail in the amount of $25,000.00.
