‘Dangerous and illegal’ substance found at school

Caln Elementary parents urged to have conversation with children

CASD1-280x250Parents of Caln Elementary School students received a telephone message Friday evening warning them of an incident that occurred at school earlier in the day.

The message said that  “a student reported they found a small group of blue baggies containing a foreign substance in the grass during recess. Upon further investigation, we found the small blue bags came from another student’s home. That student did not ride the bus, but through the investigation, it was discovered the student attempted to hand out the bags to other students.”

District and Caln police were contacted, the message said, and they determined “the substance found is dangerous and illegal.” The message urged parents to have a conversation with their children to see if it was distributed to them.

“If it is in their possession, please take it immediately to the local police,” the message said. “As a precautionary measure, we also recommend that you immediately take your child to the closest hospital emergency room for a medical evaluation.”

District Solicitor James Ellison said the Coatesville Area School District Board of School Directors is aware of this matter and has ordered a thorough and complete investigation, which is currently underway. In addition, he said the district is cooperating  with law enforcement authorities. “No other comments will be made at this time,” he said.

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan could not immediately be reached for comment.
