Elementary schoolchildren learn the rules of the road during International Walk to School Day (IWTSD) this past week in West Goshen Township.

The horde of schoolchildren may have given some West Chester residents pause this past week, but the throng of youngsters had assembled for a good cause:  International Walk to School Day (IWTSD).

In a joint effort with the West Goshen Township Police Department, Chester County Health Department, Chester County Highway Safety Project and Safe Kids Chester County Coalition, the group convened on Wednesday at Glen Acres Elementary School for a walk around nearby neighborhoods and back to the school.

The initiative was part of an effort to impart education about safe walking behaviors and the rules of the road, said Lori Aguilera, project director for Chester County Highway Safety Project in the District Attorney’s Office. In addition, the exercise offered an opportunity to stress the importance of being active and building a stronger, safer community, she said.

Aguilera said similar activities would be planned for other areas of the county in the future.
