DOWNINGTOWN — Downingtown West rode an explosive offense to earn a 41-3 win over visiting Haverford, Friday night, in the season opener for both teams.
Senior quarterback Thomas Mattioni passed for 266 yards and four TD in leading the Whippets, as they ran away from the Fords, posting 20 points in the opening quarter and 41 by halftime.
Mattioni hit Nate Alleyne for a 63-yard scoring pass to start the scoring. After a Haverford field goal, Mattioni hit Zach Barr with an 80-yard screen pass for a score and the Whippets were in business. Alleyne then caught another pass — this one for 36 yards — for another score and the Fords never were able to get moving again.
Alleyne, a junior, ended up with three catches for 157 yards and three TDs.
Best high school season opener game I have ever seen. Downingtown will be looking for a strong future from this team.
