KENNETT SQUARE – Monday’s meeting of the Kennett Consolidated School District (KCSD) Board, while succinct, contained several important agenda items impacting the long-term direction of district schools and administration.

Lorenzo DeAngelis was named principal of Kennett Middle School (KMS), replacing Dr. John Carr who recently retired. DeAngelis has worked in the district for fourteen years and was formerly KMS’ assistant principal and also served as acting principal during the search process. “It is truly and honor to be at KMS; and to be its leader is a blessing and a privilege” said DeAngelis.

KMS leadership team will also include a new assistant principal, Brenna Levi. Levi, formerly a KMS Spanish teacher, has focused her graduate work on school administration and says “I am so excited to be able to continue my career here at KMS; there is no other place I’d want to be…and, to receive so much encouragement and support from students and the community is incredible.”

KCSD’s youngest students will also be under the guidance of a new leader as April Reynolds was named the new principal of the Mary D. Lang kindergarten center and will replace Carla Horne who recently announced retirement.   Reynolds is a former KCSD elementary level and kindergarten teacher whose enthusiasm is unmistakable and infectious. “I can’t wait to start…I wish it were today!”
Reynolds will take the helm on August 3rd and is encouraging all her new students and parents to stop by and say hello. Playing off the popularity of Universal Pictures summer 2015 box office hit “Minions” Reynolds says her students are each “One in a ‘minion’!”
Following these announcements, board member Aline Frank remarked, “I have a lot of respect for the thoroughness of the candidate selection process and the qualifications of the individuals selected.”

During the personnel report, Mrs. Nancy Tischer who has served as the district’s Director of Human Resources since 1999, announced her retirement. In 2013, Tischer was nominated by her peers and honored by the Pennsylvania Association of School Personnel Administrators (PASPA) for her outstanding work and guidance to others in the school personnel field. Meeting attendees gave Tischer a standing ovation for her years of dedicated service to KCSD.

In other district news, the ongoing renovation of Greenwood Elementary’s multi-purpose room remains on track for a target completion date of August 14. Mr. Robert Perzel, KCSD’s Director of Facilities and Construction reported that the new roof top air conditioning and duct work have been successfully installed, painting has been completed and the installation of ceiling insulation is currently underway. The Greenwood project is the largest of 37 district-wide facilities projects scheduled for this summer.

Two important district fees, cafeteria pricing and district events (athletic, performing arts, dances, etc.) were approved with no increase in pricing over the 2014 fees. KCSD will continue to participate in the free and reduced lunch price programs using PA income guidelines for students’ eligibility.

The next KCSD school board meeting is scheduled for 7 PM, September 8, at Kennett High School. For additional information please visit kcsd.org.
