Phelps teacher charged with sex assault on student

WILLISTOWN — A teacher at the Phelps School has been charged with sexually assaulting a student at the boarding school.

The Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday that Matthew Scavitto, 31, was charged with  Institutional Sexual Assault, Corruption of Minors, Unlawful Contact with a Minor, and Endangering the Welfare of Children as a result of allegations made by a former student at the school.

The former student accused Scavitto of multiple instances of alleged sexual assault beginning in May, 2013, when the victim was 17 years old.The incidents happened at Scavitto’s on-campus apartment, as well as at a camp in New Hampshire, the complaint says.

Scavitto was taken into custody and is now at Chester County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail. The school fired Scavitto and is cooperating with authorities.
