South Coatesville is among eight Chester County municipalities given state funding to support recycling, according to state Senator Andy Dinniman.
Dinniman’s office announced the grants, totaling more than $166,000, Monday. Much of the funds — issued on the basis of amount of material recycled — were award to West Whiteland Township, which managed to collect some 9,993.8 tons of material, earning $106,517.
“Recycling is a simple and efficient way to protect the environment, conserve energy and reduce waste,” Dinniman said. “Chester County and its municipalities have come a long ay in encouraging recycling and re-using materials, and we can continue to do more. These grants are a great incentive to ensure that we do.”
The grants, which are based on the amount recycled and the respective municipality’s population in 2012, were awarded as follows:
· Franklin Township will receive $3,073 for 344.1 tons recycled.
· Lower Oxford Township will receive $1,228 for 205.8 tons recycled.
· Oxford Borough will receive $4,726 for 633.3 tons recycled.
· South Coatesville Borough will receive $371 for 58.3 tons recycled.
· Upper Oxford Township will receive $5,474 for 379 tons recycled.
· West Chester Borough will receive $42,303 for 5,161 tons recycled.
· West Nottingham Township will receive $2,327 for 241.1 tons recycled.
· West Whiteland Township will receive $106,517 for 9,993.8 tons recycled.
The grants come through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Recycling Development and Implementation Grant Program. The program provides incentives to help Pennsylvania communities increase the amount of materials recovered through recycling. This grant funding is in addition to the funds the Department of Environmental Protection allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs.
