La Michoacana reopening for season, its companion grill expanding
By Kathleen Brady Shea, Managing Editor, The Times
Looking for some sure signs of spring? The snow banks are decreasing in size, the clocks will spring forward on Sunday, and La Michoacana Homemade Ice Cream will reopen for the season on Saturday, March 8.
Noelia Scharon, one of the owners, said she would be at the store on Thursday, March 6, and Friday, March 7, from about 1 to 6 p.m. for those who can’t wait until Saturday. She said some new flavors are still in the planning stages so diehards will have to make do with their old favorites.
In addition to returning signature ice cream flavors – such as corn, avocado and toasted coconut – to the popular shop at State and Elm Streets, the Michoacana owners have recently opened a seating area at Michoacana Grill, located at 201 S. Union St.
After months of construction, the new addition opened on Feb. 28. Previously, the purveyor of fish tacos, shrimp quesadillas, and other Mexican specialties only had limited outdoor seating. So cold-winter business was strictly take-out.
The addition features 18 seats in an adjoining room with lots of windows, cheery terra cotta and buttery cream walls, and a handicapped ramp for access. The eatery does not have a liquor license, but patrons can bring beer or wine (make sure you pack an opener for the latter). An upstairs area with four more tables for private parties is in the works.
Of course, with warmer temperatures on the horizon, patrons will get to enjoy the al fresco dining experience as well, especially since the porch outside the new addition will create more space. And once you’ve finished that burrito or taco, you can walk off some of the calories on the way to get ice cream for dessert a few blocks away.
