Julia Baumel notches second-place finish at indoor championships

Kennett High senior Julia Baumel, who has committed to continuing her rowing prowess at Harvard University next year, earned an impressive second-place finish in the U23 women’s lightweight division at the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston this past weekend.

Baumel, a member of the Newport Rowing Club (NRC), qualified to compete in Boston earlier this month at the Main Line Slide, an indoor rowing regatta at Villanova University that serves as the official Philadelphia area satellite regatta for the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships. There, Baumel won first overall in the junior women’s category against over 100 athletes from the Mid-Atlantic region.

Baumel’s rowing resume also includes appearances at the U.S. Rowing Junior Youth Nationals the last two years, a world record for lightweight junior women’s indoor rowing marathon, a 10^th-place finish at the 2013 C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships and a win in the single at the Head of the Christina, her first race in the single category, according to the NRC web site.
