Major snowstorm — 1 to 2 feet — expected to hit Chester County Sunday evening

A National Weather Service chart showing predicted snowfalls — much of Chester County can expect 18 to 24 inches of snow.

A massive snowstorm appears likely to dump between one and two feet of snow around the greater Chester County area Sunday evening, with the biggest snowfall amounts likely to be in the southeastern portion of the county, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

A Blizzard Warning is in effect in neighboring Delaware County and multiple Chester County municipalities have declared Snow Emergencies, including Phoenixville, New Garden and Kennett Square in anticipation of the storm.

After morning rain on Sunday, the temperature is expected to drop by mid to late afternoon Sunday, with snow falling all night into Monday morning. Snowfall rates are expected to be in the 2 to 3 inches per hour range, likely made up of wet, heavy snow. NWS predicts likely power outages and blizzard conditions at times throughout the region. Trees and power lines are likely to be damaged by the heavy snowfall.

Area residents are advised to stay off the roads by Sunday night, except in an emergency.

Much of the county is expected to be closed — with schools and local businesses shuttering for the day — additional announcements of government closing are expected later Sunday.

The storm is likely to paralyze much of the northeast, with Philadelphia, New York and Boston expecting more than a foot — NYC might see nearly three feet —  before the end of Monday.
