Not surprisingly, Kennett’s Square’s inaugural New Year’s Eve extravaganza, which will include the lowering of a 700-pound, lighted steel shroom from a crane, is continuing to evolve, and borough officials said they are working with organizers to ensure a safe, entertaining evening.

“The Mushroom Festival and the Kennett Area Merchant Association have come together to sponsor and coordinate this new event,” said a news release from Kennett Square Mayor Matt Fetick and Borough Council President Danilo Maffei. “We are excited about their enthusiasm and desire to create a family-friendly event in our town. Our community has a great reputation for putting on successful events from the Mushroom Festival to the Brew Fest, to Kennett Run and the Memorial Day parade.”

The release said borough officials are looking forward to the event and are working behind the scenes to provide “adequate support services, from public safety to public works. While we are not the event organizers, we do want to ensure that our residents and visitors have a great experience on New Year’s Eve, and we are continuing to evaluate the plan and make recommendations as needed.”

The Mushroom Drop will take place at State and Union at midnight. Organizers said State Street will be closed from Broad to Center, and North Broad will be open for traffic coming from the east side of town. South Broad will be closed between Cypress and State, and South Union will be closed from Cypress to Linden.

From 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., the Funsters, a 10-piece band whose music ranges from Frank Sinatra to the Rolling Stones, the Beatles to Al Green, will perform. The price of admission? Non-perishable food items for the Kennett Food Cupboard.
