Police said Alex Davis was gunned down on July 2, 2012, a homicide that remains unsolved.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction for a 2012 Coatesville homicide, authorities said Monday.

The Citizens Crime Commission, Chester County Detectives, and Coatesville Police Department are seeking the public’s help in solving the murder of 29-year-old Alex Davis, a 2002 Downingtown High graduate and former track star.

On July 2, 2012, Davis was shot and killed at Sixth Avenue and Belmont Street in Coatesville at 11:40 p.m.  Police, who were on the scene within minutes of the homicide, said Davis was gunned down while driving his car, a blue Dodge Magnum. His vehicle crossed South Sixth Avenue and hit a chain-link fence between two homes, police said.

According to published reports, Davis, described as “a bright and friendly young man,” had experienced violence before. After attending Shippensburg University for a few years, he was working as an account manager at a local rental company when he “found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time” on Nov. 13, 2007, almost losing his left ear in a violent attack, said a newsletter from Brandywine Hospital.

Rather than removing the nearly severed ear, doctors reattached it and used several days of innovative leech therapy followed by surgery to salvage it, the newsletter said, adding that Davis formed a close bond with his surgeon Dr. David Singer and the entire Brandywine Hospital emergency-room staff.

In May 2011, court records indicate that Davis got entangled in the drug trade, pleading guilty to drug offenses from a December 2010 arrest that led to a sentence of three to 23 months in prison. While that case was being prosecuted, he was arrested a second time in March 2011 and pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia for which he received a probationary sentence, court records said.
