DMSA gets grant from Armor Alley pocket park

Armor Alley

DOWNINGTOWN — Downingtown Main Street Association has received a $108,870 Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program state grant for its Armor Alley Pocket Plaza Redevelopment project. DMSA is adding another $19,000 in matching funds.

The plaza is located in the 100 block of East Lancaster Avenue and connects the business district with Milltown Square. The redevelopment includes demolition of existing concrete sidewalk and brick planter boxes. They will be replaced by a walkway of new pavers, landscaping, painting, benches, lighting and fencing to give this plaza a much needed face lift.

In addition, DMSA is working with PennDOT for approval of a mid-block crosswalk on Lancaster Avenue to connect the Plaza with the municipal parking on the south side of Lancaster Avenue. The crosswalk is designed to allow safer access to the business district.

“We expect the project to go out to bid in the spring and work to begin in early summer,” said Becca Settle, Chairwoman, of DMSA. “The project should be completed by the end of this year. We thank state Senator Andy Dinniman and Representative Harry Lewis, Jr. for their efforts to secure this grant for Downingtown.”

Downingtown Main Street Association, a 501(c)3 organization, is comprised of citizens, property owners and businesses who share a common interest in the Borough of Downingtown’s growth, revitalization and prosperity.  DMSA’s mission is to take a lead role in revitalization efforts in the Main Street district in order to develop and enhance economic opportunities in the Borough.  The organization spearheads streetscape beautification projects, building rehabilitations and community based events in order to increase property values and decrease commercial vacancy rates to bring vitality and vigor to the Borough while preserving history and traditions that make Downingtown a special place to live, work and play.
