Letter: Yaworski’s passing a loss for Downingtown, community

To The Editor,

letters1Downingtown, Chester County and country lost a leader during the Labor Day weekend when Michael Yaworski died at the age of 92. He was one of the few remaining veterans of the U. S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Yaworski served on the USS Arctic, which was a refrigeration supply ship assigned to the Pacific Theater fleet. He achieved the rank of Boatswain’s Mate and was a gunner captain who defended the fleet ships from attacks from Japanese Zero fighter planes and saw action in major battles such as the Bougainville Campaign. Michael will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael was a crowd favorite on the Downingtown parade circuit as he was seen in many of the borough’s Christmas and Memorial Day parades as a representative of the armed forces. He was honored as the Grand Parade Marshal during the borough’s 2014 Christmas Parade and was often seen riding atop fire engines and once on an antique boat.

Michael’s passing is certainly a loss to his family, friends and country.
