Those interested in nursing as a career are invited to explore the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) Practical Nursing Program Open House on July 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brandywine Campus or Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon at the West Grove Campus.

Open House attendees can meet the instructors, tour the facilities and discover their future career as a licensed practical nurse (LPN).

“With the new healthcare laws and baby boomers about to retire, becoming an LPN is a smart choice,” said Brian Bradley, a former construction worker who says trading his hard hat for a stethoscope was the best career decision he ever made.

The CCIU Practical Nursing Program prepares students to pass the licensing exam and enter the workforce as LPNs. In addition to employment throughout Chester County in long-term care facilities, hospitals, physicians’ offices, schools and outpatient clinics, graduates with advanced education have also secured administrative positions including Director of Nursing and Nursing Home Administrator. Others have continued their studies to become nurse practitioners and nurse midwives.

“You feel good at the end of the day,” explained Suzanne Barnes, a Level III student at the West Grove campus. “We make a difference for our patients. Nursing can be stressful, but it’s always rewarding.”

The CCIU Practical Nursing Program consists of 1,635 hours of study, including 700 hours of clinical rotation, across four levels. Classroom instruction is offered at two locations: Technical College High School (TCHS) Brandywine Campus in Downingtown and TCHS Pennock’s Bridge Campus in West Grove. Students gain hands-on clinical experience at facilities like the Chester County Hospital, Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital and Pocopson Home.

The CCIU Practical Nursing Program is currently enrolling classes for the full-time program at both campuses beginning in fall 2013. For more information about the Practical Nursing Program or to fill out an application online, please visit http://www.chestercountynursing.org.

The Brandywine Campus of the CCIU Practical Nursing Program is located at 443 Boot Road in Downingtown and the West Grove Satellite Campus is located at 280 Pennock’s Bridge Road in West Grove. It is a post-secondary program that prepares students to pass the National Council for Licensure Examination – Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN) and enter the nursing profession or to continue their education. It is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
