EAST MARLBOROUGH — They had their first date on the day before Pearl Harbor, went on to become valued and beloved teachers in the Unionville community and recently celebrated 70 years of marriage — Raymond and Edith Kegg of Willowdale.

The couple recently celebrated surrounded by their five children, and many of their 15 grandchildren, 21 (and counting) great-grandchildren, and various family members’ spouses.

The two met while attending Shippensburg College — and had their first date on Saturday, Dec. 6, 1941. Raymond went off to serve in World War II, while Edith graduated, and started teaching at Kennett High School.

Once the war was over, Raymond came home to a teaching position in the then Unionville School District — joined there by Edith. The two married in 1946 and taught for the rest of their careers in Unionville and then Unionville-Chadds Ford, when the two districts merged in 1954.
