WEST CHESTER — On Friday morning, Reps. Harry Lewis Jr. (R-74) and Dan Truitt (R-156) participated in a food rescue with Fiorenza’s Food for Friends (F4) for the benefit of local homeless shelters.

“Through Fiorenza’s Food for Friends, our community is able to help the homeless by reducing food waste from schools and restaurants,” Lewis said. “By making sure that usable food items are collected, the nonprofit has decreased the need of our neighbors.”

With agreement with Aramark, volunteers collected milk and other drinks from schools in the West Chester Area School District. Lewis and Truitt focused on Sarah Starkweather Elementary and Westtown-Thornbury elementary schools while other volunteers collected drinks from the other West Chester schools. The drop-off location was at Safe Harbor, 20 North Matlack St., West Chester.

F4 is a local nonprofit that was started by Bishop Shanahan graduate, Derek Fiorenza. The organization’s focus involves collecting non-perishable food items and distributes those items to local food banks in need. Additionally, F4 rescues perishable meals from restaurants and delivers those meals to homeless shelters in need.

Fiorenza’s Food for Friends is 100 percent volunteer run and does not accept any government funding. By facilitating food drives and coordinated food rescue opportunities, millions of pounds of food have been rescue and will continue to help those in need by working with local restaurants and businesses.
