YMCA of Greater Brandywine to host MLK day of service projects

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine will take part in the 21st Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service. On January 18, nearly 500 volunteers will gather at Y branches and service project sites with one aim – to give back to the community and make it a little better for all.

Projects range from St. Paul’s Baptist Church members reading to children at the Oscar Lasko YMCA in downtown West Chester to the Helping the Homeless project in Kennett Square and making Valentine’s cards for the sick in Jennersville. Activities at each branch represent a variety of ways to help improve life in Chester County and reflect the Y’s mission.GBYMCA

“We are proud to be a part of this nationally recognized day of service and excited to know that volunteers from across the county will be joining to help us with the work we do,” Denise Day, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.

“With an event like MLK Day, the Y is the perfect starting point. For many families and children in Chester County, life can – and does – change for the better when they walk through our doors,” Day said. “Getting the chance to be a part of that, up close, while making a commitment to the health of the broader community, is what this holiday is all about.”

Nearly 60 years ago the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. posed life’s most persistent and urgent question, “What are you doing for others?”

It is a call to action the Y answers daily –  by making quality childcare affordable to working parents, Togetherhood teams making home repairs for seniors, giving people the resources to beat chronic health conditions and so much more. The Y serves to strengthen the foundations of community.
