Saturday’s Hoe Down fundraiser to help continue to fund programs

POCOPSON – For many families in our region, the Barn at Spring Brook Farm is a unique place where a type of ‘magic’ happens all year long. Thanks to its nearly 250 volunteers, energized board of directors and caring staff, the Barn now assists an impressive 300 special needs children annually; placing a keen focus on those with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
Rolling pastures, loving animals, peaceful gardens, serene nature trails and a handicap-accessible big red barn, create an enchanted backdrop that embraces a diverse group of clients; many of whom travel from across the entire Philadelphia region, and northern Delaware, to experience this one of a kind place.
In 2006, Mary Beth Drobish founded The Barn when she sought a way to combine her passion for animals with her love for children. The Barn has grown to host the popular summertime Camp Geronimo program, field trips, socialization events and individual visits; all incorporating animal-assisted activities for the purpose of enhancing children’s knowledge, confidence and physical well-being. In addition, The Barn also seeks to serve parents and caregivers through a series of ongoing expert panel discussions which share information on disability-related topics.

Board member, Lauren Powelson, explains, “I am just so enthused about all the innovative programs we are offering at The Barn…There is so much excitement from many new volunteers and tremendous momentum from our board and the Barn’s awesome staff. It is a great way to head into our tenth anniversary serving children.”
Fall is an especially important time when it comes to supporting The Barn’s mission. This Saturday, October 24, from 6-10 PM, The Barn will host its annual Hoe Down, Harvest Festival and Auction all held on its stunning property located at 350 Locust Grove Road, West Chester. Now in its eighth year, the Hoe Down serves as the Barn’s largest fundraiser, providing funding for nearly one third of its annual operating budget.
During this ‘down-home’ wear your denim party in the barn, guests will enjoy music, food, beverages and have the opportunity to bid on more than 70 premier silent and live auction items including vacation homes in Hawaii, Avalon, and Cape May, a 24’ sail boat, 40 lbs. of lean grass-fed beef from Northbrook Cattle Company, a ‘naming opportunity’ for two new Barn animals, and much more.

The Barn also hosts special events geared toward allowing ‘kids to be kids’ in a safe, nurturing, family focused environment. In just a few weeks, the community is invited to an afternoon of fall fun Saturday, November 14, from 12 – 3 PM. Tickets are $5 per child. The afternoon will included hay rides, arts and crafts, games, animal activities, and fall festivities.
