{"id":9161,"date":"2015-02-09T08:23:51","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T13:23:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=9161"},"modified":"2015-02-09T12:05:04","modified_gmt":"2015-02-09T17:05:04","slug":"kennett-chocolate-lovers-festival-wows-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=9161","title":{"rendered":"Kennett Chocolate Lovers Festival \u2018wows\u2019 again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>United Way&#8217;s popular fundraiser\u00a0draws crowds from across region<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>[slideshow_deploy id=&#8217;9165&#8242;]<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>By Kim Chiomento,<\/strong><\/span> <em><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Staff Writer, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14939\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/pic12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14939\" class=\"wp-image-14939 size-medium\" style=\"border: 2px solid #000000; margin: 4px;\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/pic12-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"pic12\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14939\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah &amp; Evelyn, of Hockessin, enjoying an afternoon of chocolate covered fun<\/p><\/div>\n<p>KENNETT \u2013 Chocolate-loving Festival attendees came to Kennett High School (KHS) to sample chocolate; and sample they did.\u00a0 This year\u2019s festival boasted 240 edible entries, in every chocolate combination imaginable, all donated in support of The United Way of Southern Chester County.<\/p>\n<p>The excitement began as early as 8 AM when area bakers began dropping off their donated creations; but by 11 AM, it was all &#8216;business&#8217; when approximately 50 esteemed volunteer judges (did we mention lucky?) began executing their duty.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After a brief orientation and training, teams of judges surveyed the room, armed with clip boards in hand, and tasted\u00a0their way through countless varieties of brownies, cupcakes, cookies, cakes and candies. \u00a0\u00a0Judges were given a mission to determine which confections would bring home top titles in the professional, amateur and student categories; and from what <em>The Times<\/em> could discern, all judges seemed quite ready\u00a0for the \u2018challenge.\u2019<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14932\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2894.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14932\" class=\"wp-image-14932 size-medium\" style=\"border: 2px solid #000000; margin: 4px;\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2894-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2894\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just a few of the judges reporting for duty: Megan Kampf, Mary Anne Leader, Mary Hutchins &amp; Molly Collins<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hundreds lined-up outside KHS&#8217; gymnasium\u00a0prior to\u00a0the 2 PM opening, in anticipation of tasting the creations. A $10 general admission featured six tasting tickets per person; with the option to purchase more. \u00a0For the more serious chocolate lovers, \u00a0Connoisseur-level (timed &amp; advance entry) tickets\u00a0were available for$25 each, however,\u00a0these tickets were sold out well in advance of Sunday&#8217;s Festival.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9162\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2884.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9162\" class=\"wp-image-9162 size-medium\" style=\"border: 2px solid #000000; margin: 4px;\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2884-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2884\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2884-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_2884.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just one of the incredibly creative chocolate-themed entries<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>The Times<\/em> spoke with attendees from across Chester County, along with\u00a0others from\u00a0the\u00a0Wilkes Barre, Hockessin, Lancaster and Harrisburg areas.\u00a0 By 3 PM KHS gymnasium was packed and buzzing with chocolate loving attendees of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>The following is a list\u00a0of the Chocolate Lovers Festival <em>First Place<\/em> category winners. The \u00a0winners took home donated gift cards from top area restaurants and, of course, 2015 bragging rights:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professional Category &#8211;\u00a0Cake:<\/strong> The Gables;\u00a0<strong>Brownies:<\/strong> Delaware Tech Culinary Arts; <strong>Cookie:<\/strong> The Country Butcher; <strong>Candy:<\/strong> Talula\u2019s Table; <strong>Cupcake:<\/strong> Rosa\u2019s Cupcakery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amateur Category &#8211;\u00a0Cake:<\/strong> Yukiko Savini &amp; Gerri Green; <strong>Brownie:<\/strong> Jeannie Mudrick; <strong>Cookie:<\/strong> Jonathan Kissell; <strong>Candy:<\/strong> Alison Snyder; <strong>Cupcake:<\/strong> Robyn Ingram<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Category &#8211;\u00a0Cake:<\/strong> Alexander Wank, <strong>Brownie:<\/strong> Alsion Morales, Jon Sweet &amp; Keiante Jones;\u00a0<strong>Cookie:<\/strong> John\u00a0 Paul Dean, Yaribet Escobar, Ryan Hamilton, Caleb Hopper, Nancy Orozco &amp; Maxine Robbins; <strong>Candy:<\/strong> Elana Lindner; <strong>Cupcake:<\/strong> Emilie Tannert-Schmidt<\/p>\n<p>The United Way thanks\u00a0its many\u00a0volunteers who helped to make the Festival happen.\u00a0Volunteers managed\u00a0all aspects of the event including entry registration, selling tickets and clean-up. \u00a0Area high school volunteers donated their afternoon to staff the tasting tables and greet guests with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to watch the Times slideshow above to see more Festival fun.
