{"id":7224,"date":"2014-09-04T11:46:13","date_gmt":"2014-09-04T15:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=7224"},"modified":"2014-09-04T11:46:13","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T15:46:13","slug":"upgrades-to-liven-up-downingtowns-armour-alley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=7224","title":{"rendered":"Upgrades to liven up Downingtown&#8217;s Armour Alley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong>Main Street Association to add plaza between Lancaster Ave. and Mill Alley<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>By Kyle Carrozza<\/strong>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Staff Writer, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/DowningtownBorough.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7225 size-medium\" style=\"border: 2px solid #000000; margin: 4px;\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/DowningtownBorough-300x290.jpg\" alt=\"DowningtownBorough\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/DowningtownBorough-300x290.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/DowningtownBorough.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>DOWNINGTOWN \u2013 The Borough&#8217;s Main Street Association unveiled plans for a plaza at Armour Alley between Downingtown Country Gifts and Belle Vie Salon at Wednesday night\u2019s Borough Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Main Street Association member Sarah Peck said that plans include adding trees, string lights to the square between the stores, a crosswalk over Lancaster Ave., and street lights from Lancaster Ave. to Mill Alley.<\/p>\n<p>Peck said that the project would help beautify the area and draw people into the borough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want as many people to visit as possible,\u201d she said, adding that she hopes that it pushes other businesses to clean up their buildings.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In addition to aesthetic value, the project will help serve the purpose of adding \u201csorely needed\u201d lighting to the area and help to provide a safe space for pedestrians to cross the street while walking from business to business.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the aspects of the projects still need to be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s preliminary. Nothing is set in stone yet,\u201d said Peck.<\/p>\n<p>Borough Council President Anthony Gazzerro requested that the Main Street Association continue to investigate the effects of adding a large tree along Lancaster Avenue as branches and roots can become invasive as the tree grows. The proposal also called for wrought iron fencing along the Lancaster Ave. sidewalk while replacing some of the blue vinyl fence behind the businesses. Councilor Alex Rakoff suggested forgoing the fencing along Lancaster Avenue and replacing the entire vinyl fence instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything to get rid of that hideous fence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Peck said that the association has received pledges for around $40,000 of the $50,000 project. Council agreed to draft a letter of support to help raise the remaining funds.<\/p>\n<p>The Main Street Association hopes that most of the project is done before Thanksgiving while certain pieces to be completed by the borough may have to wait until next year.<\/p>\n<p>Also at Wednesday night\u2019s meeting, Council accepted a $7,699 bid for one of the borough\u2019s ladder trucks.
