{"id":6910,"date":"2014-08-05T12:58:48","date_gmt":"2014-08-05T16:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=6910"},"modified":"2014-08-05T12:04:16","modified_gmt":"2014-08-05T16:04:16","slug":"kennetts-baumel-takes-2nd-in-national-bridge-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=6910","title":{"rendered":"Kennett&#8217;s Baumel takes 2nd in national bridge championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_909241\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/JBaumel-256x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-909241\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-909241\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/JBaumel-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"JBaumel\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-909241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kennett High School senior Jonathan Baumel poses with the second place trophy from the North American Bridge Championships.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kennett&#8217;s Jonathan Baumel and his bridge team placed second\u00a0at the recent Youth North American Bridge Championship, sponsored by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) and held in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a rapid rise in the national youth bridge scene for 16 year-old Baumel.\u00a0 The Kennett Township resident and senior at Kennett High School played his first bridge hand a little more than two years ago.\u00a0 Since then he has achieved the status of \u201cJunior Master\u201d and is currently just a few masterpoints away from achieving \u201cClub Master\u201d and \u201cRegional Master\u201d status within the ACBL\u2019s classification system.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In July, Baumel entered the team competition at the ACBL\u2019s Youth North American Bridge Championships along with his three bridge teammates (one from Reno, NV, and two from San Gabriel, CA). \u00a0There, Baumel\u2019s team (all age 16 or younger) took second place in the team competition against Youth (under age 20) bridge teams from across North America and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a thrill for our team to place so highly, especially since we were up against lots of opposing teams whose members were several years older than we were and had more experience\u201d, said Baumel.<\/p>\n<p>Baumel has been playing bridge online and locally at the Wilmington Bridge Studio.\u00a0 He also participates in the US Bridge Federation\u2019s Junior Training Program, a program designed to develop the next crop of American competitive bridge players.<\/p>\n<p>Duplicate bridge is the favorite game of billionaire investor Warren Buffett, and Microsoft founder, Bill Gates.\u00a0 Buffett has famously said, \u201cIt\u2019s got to be the best intellectual exercise out there.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t mind going to jail if I had three cellmates who played bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can play bridge your whole life and still learn something new every time\u201d, said Baumel.\u00a0 He hopes to continue playing competitive bridge in college and beyond.\u00a0 As he applies to colleges in the next year he will not only keep an eye on schools with top computer science, economics, and international relations programs\u2014his academic interests\u2014but also on the 25 or so colleges with top competitive bridge teams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kennett&#8217;s Jonathan Baumel and his bridge team placed second\u00a0at the recent Youth North American Bridge Championship, sponsored by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) and held in Las Vegas.
