The 65-year-old Mexican native who became a U.S. citizen and ran a landscaping business from his rented home in East Marlborough Township lost a son to drug-trafficking; however, that did not stop him from running a major cocaine cartel, authorities said on Wednesday, May 28.<\/p>\n

Announcing \u201cthe largest drug prosecution in the history of Chester County,\u201d DistrictAttorney Tom Hogan held a news conference to detail the arrests of 44 members of an international drug-trafficking operation headed by Salvador Lopez Lemus. The \u201cfamily business\u201d is estimated to have distributed more than $100 million worth of cocaine over the past two decades, Hogan said, adding that warrants were issued for 16 other members.<\/p>\n

Hogan said southern Chester County provided an ideal locale. \u201cIt\u2019s a good place for Mexican drug dealers to hide,\u201d he said, explaining that they can easily blend into the Hispanic population.\u00a0 \u201cJust like the airlines have hubs,\u201d the Kennett Square area provided a base from which drugs were shipped to \u201csource cities\u201d that include Phoenix, Az., Houston, Tx., Charlotte, N.C., and Chicago, Ill., Hogan said.<\/p>\n

He said Lemus \u2013 who involved his son Francisco Lemus, his wife Jovita Lemus, his daughter Vivian Lemus, his nephew Mario Herdendez Garcia and half a dozen other relatives in the operation \u2013 lively modestly in East Marlborough; however, he spent the winter in Mexico. \u201cSal lives the high life when he goes back to Mexico,\u201d Hogan said, describing three or four lavish homes.<\/p>\n

Hogan said authorities have known for years that drug-traffickers were operating in southern Chester County, but \u201cOperation Telarana (Spider Web)\u201d began a year ago and ramped up its intensity about six months ago.\u00a0 He said the collaboration of multiple agencies made all of the surveillance and wiretaps possible. \u00a0More than a dozen of the defendants were members of either the local Vikings or the Surenos gangs, he said. Asked about the defendants\u2019 propensity for violence, Hogan said: \u201cThey will kill you if you cooperate \u2026 They don\u2019t think twice about killing civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to the items typically seized during raids on drug dealers \u2013 cash, vehicles, weapons, jewelry, etc. \u2013 Hogan said investigators found statues of Santa Muerta and Jesus Malverde. He said the figures are considered the \u201cpatron saints of drug dealers,\u201d and praying to them is supposed to provide protection. \u201cIn this case, someone must not have been saying their prayers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Hogan was joined by representatives from a host of other law-enforcement entities. \u201cThis was a group effort,\u201d he said. Chester County Chief Detective James Vito said the partners included the Berks County District Attorney\u2019s Office, the City of Philadelphia District Attorney\u2019s Office, the state Attorney General\u2019s Office, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Philadelphia-Camden High Intensity Drug-Trafficking Area program, the Chester County Sheriff\u2019s Office, the Pennsylvania State Police, and police departments from Kennett Square, Coatesville, Oxford, and West Chester.<\/p>\n

Salvador Lemus was jailed after failing to post $1 million cash bail, court records said. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 2, records said. Because of the number of defendants, Assistant District Attorney Christopher L.\u00a0deBarrena-Sarobe said the preliminary hearings will be held on June 2, June 9, and dates to be determined. He said Magisterial District Judge Matthew Seavey set most of the bails, which range from $5,000 cash to the $1 million for Salvador Lemus.<\/span><\/p>\n
