{"id":43105,"date":"2026-03-27T09:20:44","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T13:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=43105"},"modified":"2026-03-27T09:21:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T13:21:17","slug":"on-stage-humbleman-band-has-a-special-relationship-with-no-kings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=43105","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Humbleman Band has a special relationship with &#8216;No kings&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21274\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21274\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21274\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/humble.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"218\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Humbleman Band<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Humbleman Band has a special relationship with \u201cNo Kings Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Last year, the band had a show scheduled for June 14 from noon-4 p.m. at \u201cArt on the Ridge: Saturday Artist Market\u201d at Pocket Park\u00a0in Roxborough.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In a totally uncharacteristic move for a performing act, the band told its fans not to come to the show.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Now, nine months later, the Humbleman Band has a concert scheduled for \u201cNo Kings Day Eve\u201d &#8212; March 27 \u2013 and the band is inviting all its fans to attend.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show will be held Friday night at The Royal Music &amp; Arts Center (1 South Easton Road, Glenside, <a id=\"OWA2b67af8b-f641-4b8a-9849-a6c7df0df852\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theroyalglenside.com\/\"><u>http:\/\/www.theroyalglenside.com<\/u><\/a>) where the band will share a bill with The Planets.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cHere we are with a \u2018No Kings\u2019 weekend again,\u201d said Humbleman Band singer\/guitarist Charlie Cooper, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Germantown.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s a strange coincidence. We\u2019ll be going to a \u201cNo Kings Day\u201d event on Saturday. I\u2019ll go to Norristown or Philly. I\u2019m not sure yet.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On the band\u2019s website last June, it asked fans to stay away from the event in Roxborough, which was billed as a \u201cA cultural initiative supporting local artists through rotating exhibits, pop-up markets, interactive installations, along with\u00a0sip, treats with live music.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band had no problem with the promoter, the sound system or event vibe. It\u2019s just that the scheduling created a conflict of interest.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Here was the message from Humbleman Band \u2013 \u201cShucks! Don\u2019t come see\u00a0Humbleman\u00a06\/14, go to the \u201cNo Kings\u201d rally instead.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cGo to\u00a0the \u201cNo Kings\u201d rally<i>. <\/i>\u00a0It\u2019s the thing to do. You can see\u00a0Humbleman\u00a0some other time. We\u2019d much rather be at the \u2018No Kings Rally.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Philadelphia is set to host the third major \u201cNo Kings\u201d march and rally on March 28 \u2013 one of many nationwide demonstrations\u00a0planned for the same day.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Organized locally by Indivisible Philadelphia, the event aims to draw protesters to Center City to\u00a0oppose policies of the Trump administration\u00a0and to voice broader concerns about civil rights and democratic norms.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The march will kick off between noon and 12:30 p.m., with participants beginning to gather as early as 11\u202fa.m. at Love Park, the north apron of City Hall and along John F. Kennedy Boulevard and North Broad Street, according to the city\u2019s press release.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On March 28, over 3,100 events will be\u00a0happening across the U.S. as part of the third \u201cNo Kings\u201d protest.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The \u201cNo Kings\u201d group said on its website (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mobilize.us\/nokings\">www.mobilize.us\/nokings<\/a>) that the American people are \u201cready to stand in solidarity against the Trump administration\u2019s overreach and heinous acts against working families and immigrants.\u201d Trump has previously called similar\u00a0protests\u00a0\u201ca joke\u201d run by \u201cradical left lunatics.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There are 23 events already\u00a0listed\u00a0for Minnesota, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u00a0(ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) actions in the Twin Cities\u00a0have exacerbated\u00a0local tensions, over 100 in Massachusetts, over 60 in Florida, over 40 in Texas, over 20 in New York, and many others across the country.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There will be \u201cNo Kings\u201d rallies in Chester County \u2013 March 28 at 1 p.m. at Historic Chester County Courthouse (2 North High Street, West Chester) and March 28 from noon-2 p.m. in Phoenixville.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There will also be rallies in Norristown, Media, Ardmore, Havertown, Audobon, Springfield, Wayne, Ambler and Pottstown and in Delaware in Wilmington and Newark.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With all the activity slated for Saturday, fans will have Friday night free to catch the Humbleman Band Live.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After waiting a long time for a new album by the Humbleman\u00a0Band to drop, the group\u2019s fans saw their patience rewarded four months ago when the band performed a \u201cRecord Release Show\u201d at the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The new disc, \u201cLooking Up,\u201d is an album that was several years in the making.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Humbleman\u00a0Band is one of the Philadelphia area\u2019s longest-running rock bands &#8212; and a band which has been involved in projects all over the country.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Humbleman\u00a0Band\u2019s current line-up is Charlie\u00a0Cooper\u00a0&#8211; writer, vocals, guitar; Wain Ballard &#8211; lead guitar; Kim Alexander \u2013 vocals; Boz Heinly \u2013 bass; and Buck Buchannan \u2013 drums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be playing all the songs from the new album,\u201d said\u00a0Cooper. \u201cThere are 14 songs on the record.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There will also be an added attraction.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re also going to be playing a new song that was just written and is not on the album,\u201d said Cooper, one of several musicians to come from the Norristown area along with a pair of late jazz greats \u2014 bassist Jaco Pastorius and Hammond legend Jimmy Smith.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe song is called \u2018No Kings\u2019 and was inspired by the recent \u2018No Kings\u2019 events. We\u2019re also playing a new song we\u2019ve just written \u2013 \u2018Iceman.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAnd we\u2019ll be doing some new covers. One is a Miley Cyrus song, \u2018Flowers,\u2019 and the other is a Brazilian song, \u2018Patuscada de Gandhi.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The two songs are favorites for North America and South American audiences.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cFlowers\u201d spent 57 weeks at the top of\u00a0Billboard\u00a0Adult Contemporary\u00a0chart, becoming the longest-running number one-song on any\u00a0Billboard\u00a0airplay\u00a0chart, and earned the most cumulative weeks atop all\u00a0Billboard\u00a0airplay charts of all time.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The lyrics to Gilberto Gil\u2019s song \u201cPatuscada de Gandhi\u201d are sung in Portuguese and are about the excitement and joy of participating in a parade with the children of Gandhi. It is a vibrant and energetic track that encapsulates the spirit of Brazilian carnival parades.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Humbleman\u00a0Band has been around for more than a quarter-century.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cHumbleman\u00a0Band\u00a0was formed in 1999,\u201d said\u00a0Cooper. \u201cWe get along really well musically and as friends. We have a lot of respect for each other.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Humbleman\u00a0Band is not very prolific when it comes to releasing albums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe seem to have a cycle of putting out an album every five years,\u201d said\u00a0Cooper. \u00a0\u201cWe put out an album a few years ago called \u2018Least Bad of\u00a0Humbleman\u00a01984-2009.\u2019 That album was a 25-year compilation starting with our days in 1984 as a punk band called The Proles.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band released its albums \u201cLate Bloom\u201d in fall 2014 and \u201cBeautiful Day\u201d in November 2018.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Humbleman\u00a0Band, a rock band that is socially conscious, features songs that band members have written and arranged \u2013 songs with lyrics inspired by current events.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWith \u2018Looking Up,\u2019 we recorded the rhythm section in a big studio &#8212; Rittenhouse Soundworks in Germantown. Then we did the overdubs at our home studio, J-Street Studios.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe last recordings happened in March. Then we sent it to Rittenhouse Sound for mixing and mastering.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The LP, which has an up-tempo feel and an uplifting vibe, is the band\u2019s best recording yet.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe title track \u2013 \u201cLooking Up\u201d \u2013 showcases the group\u2019s optimism with lyrics such as, \u201cNot so bad, could be worse, could be surrounded by flowers in the back of some hearse\u201d and \u201cThings are looking more up, my friend, that\u2019s how I\u2019m feelin\u2019 today.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Cooper is a native of Norristown. In the late 1960\u2019s\/early 1970\u2019s, he was part of an extended group of musical and artistic friends that lived in and around Norristown.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">That diverse group included the late Tim Boyle, one of the most \u201csought after\u201d recording engineers in Southern California; Karen Tobin, a Narberth native who established herself as a respected vocalist in the L.A. country music scene; Conshohocken native John Vuotto, a Delaware Valley acoustic guitar legend; and several music journalists including Ed Dwyer, the founding editor of High Times magazine who had earlier written the text of the\u00a0Woodstock\u00a0music festival program booklet.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Humbleman Band, a rock quintet that is socially conscious, features songs that band members have written and arranged \u2013 songs with lyrics inspired by current events.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe went out to Standing Rock (Indian Reservation) in North Dakota,\u201d said\u00a0Cooper. \u201cThat inspired song \u2013 \u2018AIM \u201921.\u2019 The title stands for \u2018American Indian in the 21st century.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In July 2023, Humbleman Band posted the following on its website \u2013 \u201cOnce again, we will be taking skateboards to the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe of Pine Ridge, South Dakota.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Sioux have managed to build a skate park with the help of some professional skateboarders and some corporate sponsorship. However, poverty is so pervasive there is little money for skateboards, pads, and helmets.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The reservation is home to over 45,000 members; over half of this population is under the age of 18; over 80% are unemployed; over half are below the poverty level; and the reservation has the lowest life expectancy of any region in the United States.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Dealing with epidemics of alcoholism, drug addiction, and depression affect the entire community.\u00a0I have seen the joy and the pride these kids get from skating. It is a healthy and positive thing for them, and I\u2019ve seen the passion with which they do it!\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Humbleman\u00a0Band has consistently delivered social commentary and positive messages, often with humor and a light touch, using spoken word lyrics, and generally delivered with dance beat arrangement.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This weekend, the focus will be on \u201cNo Kings\u201d and who could be better to do that than a musical group that evolved from a band called The Proles.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Video link for Humbleman\u00a0Band \u2014 <a id=\"OWA428e5dcb-eb90-91d3-1a43-472cd726a9b2\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: https:\/\/youtu.be\/01Clk69MaAU. But, unlike Ozzy and his bandmates, The Brook &amp; The Bluff are not a metal band nor are they British.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The members of The Brook &amp; The Bluff all hail from Birmingham, Alabama. Eight years ago, they relocated to Nashville, Tennessee.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On March 6, 2025, they released their new LP, \u201cWerewolf,\u201d on Dualtone Records. It marked the band\u2019s fifth album release.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band features Joseph Settine (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Alec Bolton (lead guitar, vocals), Kevin Canada (keyboards) and John Canada (drums, vocals).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018Werewolf\u2019 at our producer Micah Tawlks\u2019 studio in Nashville,\u201d said Bolton, during a phone interview yesterday from Nashville during a tour break.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe recorded it live in the studio. We were all facing each other in a circle. That kept the energy at a good level.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe had ideas we were excited about. We only pursued ideas that we had gotten from live playing. There was a lot of spirit \u2013 a lot of good energy.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Brook &amp; The Bluff return to their rock &amp; roll roots with \u201cWerewolf\u201d &#8212; a high-voltage, live-inspired record that turns up the amps, pushes the tempo, and howls in four-part harmony.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Fueled by the sharp songwriting and stacked vocals that have defined their catalog, the album captures the raw, supercharged energy of the band\u2019s concerts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Brook &amp; The Bluff had its start in Birmingham and continued at Auburn University where all four were undergrad students prior to graduating in 2015.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cJoseph and I met freshman year at Auburn and started a cover band,\u201d said Bolton. \u201cI actually went to high school with John and Kevin at Mountain Brook High in Birmingham.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cJoseph went to Hoover High School in Bluff Park. That\u2019s where we got the bluff and the brook for the band\u2019s name.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAt Auburn, we started the band and did cover shows. They did well enough. Then, we decided to move back to Birmingham.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe recorded a three-song acoustic EP with \u2018Rush,\u2019 \u2018Straws\u2019 and \u2018A Little Change of Pace.\u2019 It was a trio for a little bit and then we decided to add a bassist.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt took some time to play a show fully with original shows. After a while, we decided to move to Nashville.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWhen we moved to Nashville, we wanted to give it everything we had &#8212; while we were still 25 years old.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe did six months of doing cover shows without a single person in the room.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe were playing the Cambria Hotel. Jeffrey Hasson, a promoter, heard us and contacted our booking agent. That was our first distinct move forward.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIn 2018, we went on a big, three-month tour opening for Ripe, a really good band from Boston. We learned that we need to have passion and energy in our performance.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIn 2019, we recorded the \u2018Halfway Up\u2019 single with Micah. That\u2019s when we began the cycle of tour, write and record and then tour some more.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After nearly a decade of nonstop touring &#8212; earning 200M+ streams with fan favorites like \u201cHalfway Up\u201d and<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cEverything Is Just a Mess\u201d &#8212; the band pressed pause and regrouped in Nashville, meeting every morning to write and rehearse like they did in their early days at Auburn University.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Channeling the spirit of Creedence, Petty, and Eagles, \u201cWerewolf\u201d delivers loud, melodic, deeply human songs like the lead single \u201cSuper Bowl Sunday\u201d alongside the highway-born \u201c105\u201d and the swaggering \u201cGet By.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Video link for The Brook &amp; The Bluff \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WBuSLatGCXI\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/WBuSLatGCXI<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show at Union Transfer on March 31, which has Cassandra Coleman as the opening act, will start at 8 p.m.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets are $25.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Other upcoming shows at Union Transfer are Drain on March 27 and There, There on March 28.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein\u201d is running now through April 19 at the Candlelight Theater (2208 Millers Road, Arden, Delaware,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/candlelighttheatredelaware.org\/\">candlelighttheatredelaware.org<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show is a Mel Brooks Broadway musical based on the movie \u201cYoung Frankenstein,\u201d a 1974 comedy film written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Described by Brooks as his best film, it is a parody of the horror film genre &#8212; especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley\u2019s \u201cFrankenstein.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">After the success of the movie, which has been named to the \u201cTop 50\u201d lists of comedy films by a number of organizations, Brooks teamed with Thomas Meehan to write and produce a stage version of the show.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The show tells the story of Frederick Frankenstein, a New York doctor who is ashamed to be a Frankenstein and insists his name be pronounced \u201cFronkensteen.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">His grandfather Dr. Victor von Frankenstein, a mad scientist, passed away so the younger Frankenstein has to travel to Transylvania to settle the estate.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In Transylvania, Dr. Frankenstein becomes involved with a variety of zany characters including the hunchback Igor, the yodeling lab assistant Inga, the mysterious Frau Bl\u00fccher and, of course, The Monster.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Candlelight Theater is presenting \u201cThe Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein\u201d now through April 19.
