{"id":37558,"date":"2022-10-27T15:12:05","date_gmt":"2022-10-27T19:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=37558"},"modified":"2022-10-27T15:12:13","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T19:12:13","slug":"on-stage-the-joy-formidable-comes-to-philly-from-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=37558","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: The Joy Formidable comes to Philly from Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17056\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17056\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17056\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/joy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Joy Formidable<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a Cambrophile living in this area or a fan of the Welsh National Football Team, you have plenty to be happy about right now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 27, The Joy Formidable, one of the best bands to come out of Wales in the last two decades, will be headlining a show at Underground Arts (1200 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia,<a href=\"http:\/\/undergroundarts.org\/\">http:\/\/undergroundarts.org<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 21, Wales will be competing in the World Cup for the first time since 1958. The Dragons open play against United States at the quadrennial tournament which is being staged in Qatar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Joy Formidable\u00a0is a\u00a0Welsh\u00a0alternative rock\u00a0band, formed in 2007 in\u00a0Mold, Flintshire. The band features Rhiannon \u201cRitzy\u201d Bryan (lead vocals,\u00a0guitar), Rhydian Dafydd (bass,\u00a0vocals) and Matthew James Thomas (drums,\u00a0percussion). The original drummer was Justin Stahley. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t really become the band we are now until 2009 when Matt joined,\u201d said Bryan, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryan and Dafydd grew up together in North Wales but no seeds for a future band were planted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRhydian and I were in elementary school, middle school and high school together,\u201d said Bryan. \u201cBut we had separate ways. We went to a small bilingual Welsh school but never played in bands together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A career in music was not something that Bryan expected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt took me by surprise,\u201d said Bryan. \u201cI\u2019ve always written. I grew up in a rural area as an only child. I played with words. Then, I got a guitar when I was 12. I thought I would have just enjoyed doing it by myself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt stayed that way until I got back together with Rhydian. He coerced me to share more. The more I played with him, the more confidence I felt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had a great writing chemistry. I like what he brought out of me. We both listen to a lot of different music. His is definitely heavier than mine \u2013 Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy music tastes came more from my parents\u2019 record collection. I like songwriters from the 60s and 70s \u2013 singers with unique voices like Nick Drake. I also liked bands like the Cure and prog bands like Yes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to tell stories. Together, we like that power of creating. It is the dynamics we like.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Joy Formidable released its debut album, \u201cThe Big Roar,\u201d in 2011 and followed with \u201cWolf\u2019s Law\u201d (2013), \u201cHitch:\u201d (2016), \u201cAARTH\u201d (2018) and \u201cInto the Blue\u201d (2021).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe started tracking \u2018Into the Blue\u2019 in December 2019,\u201d said Bryan. \u201cWe hadn\u2019t even recorded it by March 2020. Then, we could sense that things were going to be different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInto the Blue\u201d was eventually released in August 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe album was recorded mostly in Utah,\u201d said Bryan. \u201cRhydian and I have a place in southern Utah. Half the year, we\u2019re back in Wales \u2013 in Mold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe original plan before the pandemic was for us to record in a room together in Wales with Matt. Then, everything closed. Rhydian and I decided to stay in Utah. We live together and have a modest studio where we record. We did the drums remotely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic lockdown had an effect on the album.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe album chronicled having some time and space to get in touch with myself as a writer,\u201d said Bryan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think all our albums have been personal \u2013 but cryptic. This one is a little more open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, The Joy Formidable is back on the road.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur last tour ended in December 2019 in Philly,\u201d said Bryan. \u201cThere are some of our first dates in three years. Prior to coming over, we did a couple of spot date in the U.K. to make sure we still had it together. Everything feels extremely fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 14, <strong>The Joy Formidable<\/strong>\u00a0released \u201c<em>Into the Blue Deluxe Edition,\u201d which<\/em> includes\u00a0<strong>two new songs<\/strong>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<strong>new artwork\u00a0<\/strong>to commemorate the release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Bryan, \u201cIt\u2019s been a strange feeling, to release an album in 2021 and not get the chance to share it live with an audience, especially an album like<em>\u00a0\u2018Into the Bl<\/em>ue\u2019 that has a lot of live energy. We feel like it deserves that moment and we wanted to re-visit the recorded version with some new tracks ahead of the tour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each show on this tour will be different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re out for more than two months so I\u2019d go crazy if I had to sing the same songs every night,\u201d said Bryan. \u201cIt\u2019s been hard to choose a set list. We\u2019re playing songs from our entire catalog \u2013 and a few Welsh songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video link for The Joy Formidable \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QieV2LyIxGw\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/QieV2LyIxGw<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show at Underground Arts, which has Cuffed Up as the opening act, will start at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets are $28.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that COVID has slowed down and pandemic restrictions are becoming a thing of the past, it has become an era of return for musicians \u2013 return to the studio, return to touring, return to a small semblance of normalcy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17057\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17057\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17057\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/berardo-350x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"211\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chris Berardo<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Berardo is definitely in return mode right now. He has returned to touring \u2013 including a return to an area venue he has played several times. On October 27, Berado will share the bill with the Outlaws at the Sellersville Theater (24 West Temple Avenue, Sellersville, 215-257-5808,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.st94.com\/\">www.st94.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve played the Sellersville Theatre a number of times over the years,\u201d said Berardo, during a phone interview Monday from his home near Norwalk, Connecticut. \u201cIt\u2019s a great place to play. The sound is great, and the audiences are really responsive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berardo has also returned to his musical past. His latest album is also his oldest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York-born\/Connecticut-based singer\/songwriter recorded\u00a0\u201cAmerican Dust\u201d\u00a0in 1997. For its 25th\u00a0anniversary, Berardo released it digitally for the first time on September 27 with the first single, \u201cOld Man\u2019s Eyes,\u201d made available back in August 26.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have an album that\u2019s been done for two years that won\u2019t be released for a while,\u201d said Berardo. \u201cWith the re-release of \u2018Dust,\u2019 it was a good start to clear the palate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018Dust\u2019 on eight-track machines. They were uneven. It\u2019s a hodge-podge but a lot of it holds up. I stand by all these songs. In 25 years, it was never up on digital platforms, so I felt it was time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berardo\u2019s relationship with music goes back a long way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKathy Downs was my babysitter,\u201d said Berardo. \u201cShe was 15 and I was five. She gave me all her Monkees records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Berardo graduated from New Rochelle High School, he headed south to the University of Miami.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI spent three spring breaks in a row in Daytona Beach,\u201d said Berardo. \u201cPalm trees are good so the University of Miami seemed like a good choice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I was in college, I went to Key West on weekends. There was a good music scene there. I sat in with different musicians. That\u2019s when I realized I had to stop college.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had a buddy who started a band in D.C., so I left Miami and moved to D.C. Then, I moved to L.A. and did some stuff there. But, it ran its course so I went back to New York. Then, I went back to L.A.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Berardo first started performing around New York City in the 1980\u2019s he attracted the attention of superstar manager\u00a0Bill Aucoin\u00a0(Kiss, Billy Idol), who offered his help and encouragement. Berardo\u2019s bands were always on the verge, but never broke through.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aucoin helped Berardo move to Los Angeles and get situated in L.A.\u2019s music scene. Berardo honed his songwriting craft working with hit songwriter\/producer\/ Songwriter&#8217;s Hall of Fame member Bob Crewe (Four Seasons, LaBelle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBill Aucoin was helping me get to the next stage,\u201d said Berardo. \u201cThere was a movie called \u2018Long Street\u2019 that needed a song, and he got them to use one of mine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAround that time, I started working with Bob Crewe. I started writing songs with him at Village Recorders. Then, I decided to leave L.A. because the scene was getting real metal. Back in New York, I got into new things musically. By then, I had my own band \u2013 and my own sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berardo\u2019s band was The DesBerardos and it featured his brothers Marc Douglas Berardo and Scott Berardo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of guys in the band have come and gone but Marc has been a constant,\u201d said Berardo. \u201cHe started playing with me when I got back from L.A.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe performed as a duo playing other people\u2019s songs at any place with neon. We were playing songs by Neil Young, the Eagles, Jackson Browne and Poco.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, Berardo started doing his own music and released his first album (\u201cDust\u201d) in 1997. He followed with the \u201cPure Faith\u201d album in 2005 and \u201cIgnoring All the Warning Signs\u201d in 2009 \u00a0(which spent two months in the Top Ten at Sirius Radio\u2019s XM Outlaw channel, and hit #49 on the Billboard American Chart).<br \/>\nReturning stronger than ever with successful 2020 single \u201cSomewhere Blue\u201d swiftly followed by a killer cover of Badfinger&#8217;s hit song &#8220;Baby Blue&#8221; , and the imminent fourth album\u00a0\u201cWilder All The Time\u201d\u00a0(all produced by David Abeyta of Reckless Kelly), Berardo has definitely returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video link for Chris Berardo &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PKQcMB4WOy4\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/PKQcMB4WOy4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show at the Sellersville Theater with the Outlaws headlining will start at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ticket prices start at $59.50.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other upcoming shows at the Sellersville Theater are Altan on October 28, Peter Yarrow on October 29, and Joe Matarese with Shannon Fiedler on October 30.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17058\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17058\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17058\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/the-commonheart-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17058\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Commonheart<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commonheart has also returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pittsburgh-based band will headline a show at the World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcafelive.com\/\">www.worldcafelive.com<\/a>) on October 28 in celebration of its new album, \u201cFor Work or Love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group\u2019s new album was produced by Abington native Steve Berlin. Berlin is the horn player of Los Lobos, a legendary band that the Commonheart toured with in 2017 and formed a musical bond with. It was officially released on September 16, 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis was our third album,\u201d said band founder Clinton Clegg, during a phone interview Monday afternoon from his home on the north side of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur first record was \u2018Grown,\u2019 in 2016. We released our second album, \u2018Pressure,\u2019 in 2018 and then the new album came out last month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commonheart\u2019s 2022 line-up features Abby Gross \u2013 Saxophone; Mariko Reid \u2013 Vocals; Anton DeFade \u2013 Bass; Cole Insko- Drums; Mike Minda- Guitar; Lucas Bowman- Keyboards; Nate Insko- Trumpet; and Clegg- Vocals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe current line-up has been together since \u2018Pressure\u2019 in 2018,\u201d said Clegg. \u201cWe went through the pandemic together. There are 10 in the band, but we usually tour with seven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commonheart\u2019s musical menu features a blend of American styles &#8212; blues, vintage soul, and rock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commonheart began back in 2014,\u201d said Clegg. \u201cA few musician friends and I were bouncing around in different projects. I wanted to build something a little more serious. I started getting more professional.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was trying to put as Blood, Sweat and Tears type band. It took a few years to get going. Then, we had a big breakout show here in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGary Clark, Jr. needed an opening act and his tour manager reached out to us. We were in front of 2,000 fans of our own demographic \u2013 blues and soul.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat launched us. It was a pretty special night. Our next show was as headliner at Mr. Smalls theater in Millvale, a Pittsburgh suburb. We sold out immediately. That made us feel like we had accomplished something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clegg\u2019s introduction to music came from his mother Barbara.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy mom was an organ player in church,\u201d said Clegg. \u201cI learned to sing and be a part of that. At that age, I thought it was punishment \u2013 but it was the start.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe bought me a B.B. King record which got me really started. I played cello, bass and acoustic guitar. Around 18, I started writinh things. I got in a band and began playing electric guitar. With the Commonheart, I just sing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commonheart followed in the tradition of Pittsburgh\u2019s legendary Rusted Root \u2013 a big band that rocks with a variety of instruments and a deciation to American roots music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I put this band together, I met a majority of the members just by playing open mics around the city and playing smaller club shows,\u201d said Clegg. \u201cA lot of the people in the band have jazz backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe recorded the new album at Church Recording Studio in Pittsburgh. We started tarcking in October 2021.
