{"id":34315,"date":"2021-04-22T08:49:48","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T12:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=34315"},"modified":"2021-04-22T08:49:53","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T12:49:53","slug":"ymca-to-unveil-new-pickleball-courts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=34315","title":{"rendered":"YMCA to unveil new pickleball courts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_13756\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/WCAY-Pickleball-Court-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13756\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13756\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/WCAY-Pickleball-Court-1-350x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new pickleball courts at the YMCA of West Chester.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>WEST CHESTER \u2014 The YMCA of Greater Brandywine\u202f(YGBW)\u202fis set to\u00a0unveil\u202fits\u202fnew indoor pickleball courts at the\u00a0West Chester Area YMCA, 605 Airport Road, West Chester,\u202fon\u00a0Monday, April\u00a026\u202fat noon\u00a0during its\u00a0\u201cFirst Serve Pickleball Court Opening\u00a0Ceremony.\u201d\u202f\u00a0Pickleball, which is currently the fastest growing sport in the U.S., is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton,\u00a0tennis\u00a0and ping pong.<\/p>\n<p>Denise Day, President and CEO of YGBW and Laura Schofield-Pierson, Executive Director of the West Chester Area YMCA, will both offer remarks during the event on Monday followed by a countdown to the first official serve. YGBW members will then take to the courts to play with staff providing demonstrations on how to play pickleball.\u00a0All are welcome to attend by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ymcagbw.org\/events\/first-serve-pickleball-court-opening\">RSVPing here<\/a>. All COVID safety precautions are being followed and masks are required to attend. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>These are\u00a0the first of many new pickleball courts\u2014both indoor and outdoor\u2014that YGBW is installing\u00a0in\u00a0seven of\u00a0its\u00a0Chester County\u00a0branches.\u00a0Over the next few months, official outdoor pickleball courts\u00a0will be installed at the\u00a0Jennersville\u00a0YMCA, Kennett\u00a0Area YMCA\u00a0and Upper Main Line YMCA, while\u00a0the outdoor courts at the Brandywine YMCA will be\u00a0renovated.\u00a0Additionally, at\u00a0the\u00a0Brandywine\u00a0YMCA, Jennersville\u00a0YMCA, Kennett\u00a0Area YMCA,\u00a0Lionville\u00a0Community YMCA and\u00a0Oscar\u00a0Lasko\u00a0YMCA, the gymnasium floors are being resurfaced to create indoor pickleball courts with official court markings and color-coded kitchens.\u00a0With both indoor and outdoor courts, members will be able to play year-round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore and more of our\u00a0members have been playing pickleball in our gyms for a few years now,\u201d says Day. \u201cGiven their interest, and the growing popularity, we wanted to\u00a0invest in providing\u00a0official pickleball courts and offering\u00a0opportunities for more\u00a0YGBW members\u00a0to learn how to play. It\u2019s a great way for people to stay active, have fun and spend time with family and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pickleball brings people together, as it is a multi-generational sport that can be played by all ages and abilities. It is\u00a0quick to learn and affordable to play. \u201cWhile pickleball\u2019s popularity is surging in the 55 and older age group,\u00a0it\u2019s becoming just as popular with younger people and families. The best part of the sport is that it is something everyone can play\u202fand that families can enjoy together. I\u2019m excited to help people fall in love with the sport,\u201d says Michelle Smith, YGBW\u2019s pickleball coordinator, who\u00a0is\u00a0expanding\u00a0the organization\u2019s\u00a0pickleball offerings with\u00a0lessons,\u00a0classes, leagues, clinics and more.<\/p>\n<p>YGBW currently offers open pickleball play at multiple\u00a0branches for its members\u00a0and no equipment or prior experience is required. Paddles are available for use and a rotation system is used to ensure everyone is welcome to play.
