{"id":33946,"date":"2021-02-13T09:56:35","date_gmt":"2021-02-13T14:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=33946"},"modified":"2021-02-13T09:56:44","modified_gmt":"2021-02-13T14:56:44","slug":"county-officials-hit-state-doh-over-vaccine-distribution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=33946","title":{"rendered":"County officials hit state DOH over vaccine distribution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>By Mike McGann<\/strong>, <em>Editor, The Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mikemcgannpa\">@mikemcgannpa<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13394\" style=\"width: 351px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/CountyVaccine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13394\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13394\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/CountyVaccine-341x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13394\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic courtesy Chester County<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Chester County officials addressed public frustration with the COVID-19 vaccine roll out, issuing a statement Friday afternoon, expressing frustration with the state Department of Health\u2019s (DOH) inability to meet the county\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The statement makes clear that Chester County officials feel the county is not getting its share of vaccine from the state \u2014 despite being one of the largest counties in the state and having a well-defined and well-managed system to get shots in arms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to state DOH, 318,450 doses were distributed statewide this past week, just 5,700 went to Chester County Health \u2014 of 18,500 doses sent to the county this past week.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAs the 6<span class=\"s1\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span> most populated county in Pennsylvania, Chester County should be receiving more COVID-19 vaccine doses than we are currently getting,\u201d the statement said. \u201cIt is not for want of asking.\u00a0The Chester County Health Department has requested nearly 51,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine since December 17<span class=\"s1\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span>, and to date, we have received just half of what was requested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With some 154,000 county residents eligible for vaccination under the state DOH\u2019s Phase 1A, demand continues to wildly outstrip supply and residents have been scrambling to get appointments for vaccination. Just 14,009 people have been given the first dose of the Moderna vaccine, while 4,220 have gotten their second dose from Chester County Health. Other health care sources \u2014 hospitals, long-term care facilities and pharmacies \u2014 have been given the lion&#8217;s share of vaccines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Friday afternoon, state DOH officials said they would start shifting supply towards those providers who have been most effective in getting the vaccine into people\u2019s arms, but it would likely take a few weeks for that to go into effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Meanwhile, the county is hoping to pressure DOH to speed up the process of boosting supply in the county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe Chester County Commissioners are working in support of the Chester County Health Department, and on behalf of all county residents, to appeal to the PA Department of Health on the need for more vaccine in more highly populated areas of the state, and to ask that priority be given to the Chester County Health Department as a vaccine provider,\u201d the county statement said. \u201cWe have shared this with our state legislators, so that they can also lobby for our appeal for more vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Additionally, County Health is working to streamline the process for getting appointments and plans to add more locations for vaccinations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also adding to, and improving upon services and programs every day including personalized vaccine appointments that are password-protected, and contracts signed for more vaccine clinic locations across the county that will open as more vaccine doses are delivered to us,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Additional call center capacity will go live next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNext week, we are expanding our call center capabilities \u2013 in English and Spanish \u2013 to answer questions, pre-register for the vaccine, and schedule appointments when internet booking isn\u2019t an option,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>With current supply, County Health estimates 4,380 people in Phase 1A will receive the vaccine each week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, the expectation is that supply will increase, boosting that weekly number in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The county is operating vaccine clinics in three locations \u2013 The Government Services Center in West Chester, the Kennett Square Fire Company\u2019s Red Clay Room, and West Chester University\u2019s Sturzebecker Health Sciences Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mike McGann, Editor, The Times @mikemcgannpa Chester County officials addressed public frustration with the COVID-19 vaccine roll out, issuing a statement Friday afternoon, expressing frustration with the state Department of Health\u2019s (DOH) inability to meet the county\u2019s needs.
