{"id":31214,"date":"2020-02-18T08:57:23","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T13:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=31214"},"modified":"2020-02-18T08:57:51","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T13:57:51","slug":"escalera-supports-avondale-high-school-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=31214","title":{"rendered":"ESCALERA supports Avondale High School youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11179\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_5032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11179\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11179\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_5032-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ESCALERA Students prepare for STEM night during their afterschool session in Avon Grove High School.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>WEST GROVE \u2014 ESCALERA, a national program from UnidosUS, is currently serving about 1,000 students in 21 sites nationwide.\u00a0 The career readiness program focuses on opening eyes and doorways for underrepresented youth that may not have a family history or experience in pursuing higher education.\u00a0 \u201cIt is important to have a program like this,\u201d said Brian Luna, a high school junior in the program who is interested in studying psychology.\u00a0 \u201cA lot of us don\u2019t realize all that you have to do to apply to college.\u201d LCH (La Comunidad Hispana) offers the ESCALERA model to students in southern Chester County through Avon Grove high school, where thirteen students meet after school once a week.<\/p>\n<p>Lorena Baeza, instructor for ESCALERA, said that programs like these are essential for connecting first generation students to higher education.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cGrowing up, my parents did not understand English, let alone how to navigate the education system. But thanks to Upward Bound at Lincoln University, I was able to achieve higher education.\u201d\u00a0 Baeza was born in Mexico and then moved to the United States.\u00a0 She graduated from Avon Grove High School in 2003 and completed her bachelor\u2019s in psychology and Spanish with California University of Pennsylvania.\u00a0 Baeza has spent her career working with local youth.\u00a0 \u201cIt is so rewarding to be a part of this,\u201d she said. \u201cI have firsthand experience of what these students are going through.\u00a0 I can relate.\u00a0 I was literally in their shoes.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the after-school sessions with Baeza, which include leadership building skills, career exploration, and a review of the application process for higher education, ESCALERA recently hosted a family STEM night at Avon Grove High School.\u00a0 ESCALERA students taught STEM activities to attendees, including homemade slime, lava lamps, and ice cream. \u00a0A panel of local professionals spoke to the students and reflected not only on their STEM career paths, but also on their experiences as first generation students.
