{"id":30601,"date":"2019-12-05T08:37:52","date_gmt":"2019-12-05T13:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=30601"},"modified":"2019-12-05T08:37:54","modified_gmt":"2019-12-05T13:37:54","slug":"on-stage-peacock-antigone-rising-still-going-strong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=30601","title":{"rendered":"On Stage:  Peacock, Antigone Rising still going strong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <\/span><em><span lang=\"EN\">Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10661\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Peacock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10661\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10661\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Peacock-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alice Peacock<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Just before the end of last century, two female acts arrived on the music scene and immediately began receiving accolades for their work and started building a solid fan base \u2013 Alice Peacock in 1999 and Antigone Rising in 1998.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">We\u2019re now approaching the end of the second decade of this century and both acts are still making great music. These acts will be performing on back-to-back nights at The Locks at Sona (4417 Main Street, Manayunk, 484- 273-0481, <a href=\"http:\/\/sonapub.com\/\">sonapub.com<\/a>) \u2013 Peacock on December 5 and Antigone Rising on December 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Peacock is now playing shows in support of her new album, \u201cMinnesota.\u201d It is her seventh LP release and the follow-up to her last solo studio album, 2009\u2019s \u201cLove Remains.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI took time off for life and family,\u201d said Peacock, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon as she drove on the streets of Washington, D.C. on her way to a TV appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve had three kids and moved to Cincinnati. I\u2019m excited to be out doing shows again. My husband travels for work and just got back. Now, we switch. He\u2019s taking care of the kids and I\u2019m on a plane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cFor me, it\u2019s a nice change from being a full-time mom to a live performer. We have seven-year-old twins \u2013 a boy and a girl \u2013 and a 10-year-old son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI don\u2019t take it for granted that I get to play for people. It\u2019s really a gift \u2013 especially after having a family. It\u2019s a challenge finding that balance. I\u2019d love to get back overseas for shows but I can\u2019t get away that long \u2013 and I don\u2019t want to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The title of \u201cMinnesota\u201d comes from the name of the state where Peacock was born. Some of the album\u2019s songs were written in 2015, the year Peacock took the third annual Real Women Real Songs challenge \u2013 which meant writing 52 songs in 52 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made the album in the fall of 2018 when the twins started full-time kindergarten,\u201d said Peacock.<\/p>\n<p>Peacock cites Grammy Award-winning producer\/keyboardist Phil Madeira as a driving force behind the album<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy friend Phil Madeira produced the record,\u201d said Peacock. \u201cHe\u2019s in Emmylou Harris\u2019 Red Dirt Boys along with guitarist Will Kimbrough, bassist Chris Donahue and drummer Bryan Owings. He called me from Nashville and said the they were all in town and had some free time so I should come down and cut a record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey play together all the time so making the album was quick and easy to do \u2013 which was especially good with a tight budget. Everything was recorded live. All the vocals were live, and we didn\u2019t overdub anything. We cut the basic tracks in four days at the Butcher Shoppe in Nashville with engineer Sean Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been building up songs for a couple years. I had only been doing 8-to-12 shows a year. I had a collection of songs and sent them to Phil. Then, we whittled the list of songs down to 10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the rhythm tracks and vocals were done in two days and then we spent another two days doing the extra stuff. It felt super to be back in the studio again. I love the interplay with other musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Peacock released her debut album \u201cReal Day\u201d in 1999 and followed with \u201cAlice Peacock\u201d on Aware\/Columbia Records\u2014an album that featured backup vocals by John Mayer and <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Indigo Girl<\/span><span lang=\"EN\"> Emily Saliers. Originally, the album was slated to be her second independent release, but good fortune intervened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was a few days away from getting 10,000 copies pressed and releasing the album myself,\u201d said Peacock. \u201cA friend of mine took an advance copy to Gregg Latterman, the president of Aware Records. He asked me to come to a meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cHe said he loved the album and wanted to buy it. I liked Aware because they had an indie approach but also had the advantage of having Columbia Records behind them. It was like what I had been doing &#8212; only on steroids.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Peacock\u2019s third album, \u201cWho I Am,\u201d was released on July 4, 2006 \u2013 an appropriate day for an artist who had freed herself from the shackles of a major label and successfully embarked on an independent route.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe album was on my own label \u2013 Peacock Music,\u201d said Peacock. \u201cIt was self-released with distribution through Universal (Music Group). So, I had the best of both worlds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Peacock\u2019s fourth album, \u201cLove Remains,\u201d was co-produced by Danny Myrick and Peacock and released in 2009. Together, they recorded and released the \u201cMyrick\/Peacock\u201d album in 2011. Her sixth album was \u201cLive from Space,\u201d which came out in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Peacock was a theater major in college. Her grandmother Gritta Albrecht Gnass was a cabaret star and composer in Berlin prior to WWII and her grandfather Fritz Gnass was an actor who appeared in Fritz Lang\u2019s \u201cM\u201d and was a member of Bertold Brecht\u2019s Berliner Ensemble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI come from a very musical family,&#8221; said Peacock, who grew up in a small Minnesota town. \u201cMusic has always been a natural way for me to express myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Area fans are looking forward to Peacock\u2019s return to the Delaware Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m excited to be coming back to play Philadelphia,\u201d said Peacock. \u201cI had a lot of good times there with shows at The Point and the Tin Angel. They are best known for their three-part harmonies and songs that speak to the heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In more than 20 years as one of America\u2019s hardest-working bands, Antigone Rising has established a far-reaching reputation for sticking to their instincts. The New York natives\u2019 live performances have earned them a long-term devotion from fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Antigone<\/span><span lang=\"EN\"> Rising\u2019s passionate social conscience continues to manifest itself in the group&#8217;s tireless activism.\u00a0In 2014, the band launched the ambitious nonprofit organization, Girls Rising, whose live presentations reflect the same passionate belief that drives the trio\u2019s music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Throughout the year, Girls Rising partners with local school districts and youth centers to create programming that\u2019s designed to inspire and empower young girls and LGBTQ youth through live performances, presentations and workshops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The band also presents the annual Girls Rising Music Festival and Game Changer Awards, now in its sixth year. We use ProTools and some outboard gear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe use our voice to talk about things that matter to us. With Girls Rising, we\u2019re putting our energy into empowering girls. Girls Rising is amazing \u2013 doing some really great stuff like taking Reach Workshops to schools. The focus is empowering young girls and boys and LGBTQ youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The band\u2019s\u00a0activism is reflected in much of Antigone Rising\u2019s latest work, as the trio continues releasing singles to download and stream throughout the year. 2019\u2019s\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s Gonna Be Alright\u201d is an optimistic spin during a time of political unrest. Then, they hit New York full-time 25 years ago as a sister act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve been with the band for 10 years now. They were going through changes in the line-up and I was in limbo about continuing on as a solo artist. We spent time hanging out as friends and decided to get together musically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe first album I did with them was \u2018Live for the Bitter End\u2019 in 2010. The material we play now in our live show dates back to that album. We do play some songs from previous incarnations \u2013 but not many.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Fans can expect some new Antigone Rising music in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe have four or five songs that are done and completely ready to go,\u201d said Camps. \u201cWe haven\u2019t created an album in a while. We\u2019re struggling to find the right way to put it out in this era of the singles\/album conundrum. Our fans still want CDs.
