It has established its reputation as an area known for staging top-flight equestrian events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The 2019 equestrian season had its unofficial start last weekend with a big annual point-to-point event in Delaware \u2013 even if the horse racing events got shelved because of the weather and the muddy course.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This weekend, the spotlight will be on the Annual Willowdale Steeplechase (Steeplechase grounds, routes 82 and 926, Unionville, 610-444-1582,<a href=\"http:\/\/willowdalesteeplechase.org\/\">http:\/\/willowdalesteeplechase.org<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This year\u2019s 27th annual staging of the event will be held on May 12 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Willowdale Shops, Restaurant Booths, Kid\u2019s Alley Tent and the \u201cAntique Car Display\u201d are all scheduled to run all day starting at 10 a.m. The \u201cSilver Tailgate Competition\u201d will start at 11:30 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The initial competition will be the \u201cJack Russell Races\u201d\u00a0at 10:30 a.m. followed by the pony races at 11:30 a.m. The first of seven steeplechase races will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the racing is scheduled to end between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Gates will close at 6 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Willowdale Steeplechase is a first-class steeplechase course that features an uphill approach to the fences. This encourages less speed and more jumping and, as a result, causes less wear and tear on the horses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This year\u2019s Willowdale Steeplechase has several beneficiaries &#8212; Quest Therapeutic Riding Services, Inc., The Stroud Water Research Center and The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine at New Bolton Center. Tickets are $40 at the gate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bwine-battle-park.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9524 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bwine-battle-park-350x271.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a>On May 11, the Brandywine Battlefield Park (1491 Baltimore Pike, Chadds Ford, <a href=\"http:\/\/brandywinebattlefield.org\/\">http:\/\/brandywinebattlefield.org\/<\/a>) will offer visitors a living history experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">From 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the historic site will present \u201cEncampment Day 2019\u201d \u2013 an event that focuses on the daily life and experience of a soldier in Washington&#8217;s Army.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Visitors to the park can experience life in an 18th-century military encampment and interact with soldiers from the American Revolution. They will also be able to observe different historical demonstrations and learn about different aspects and logistics of an 18th-century army.<br \/>\nAdmission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $8 for children (ages 5-12). Active Military and immediate family will be admitted free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/winterthur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9525\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/winterthur-350x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a>On May 12, Winterthur Museum, Garden &amp; Library (Route 52, Wilmington, Delaware, 800-448-3883, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winterthur.org\/\">www.winterthur.org<\/a>) will be presenting \u201cAzaleas, Bluebells and Follies Day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Visitors to the site will be able to enjoy the spectacle of thousands of azalea blossoms and acres of wildflowers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The day\u2019s events will include the opportunity to take photos with Mom in Azalea Woods, shop at the \u201cAzalea Sale\u201d at the Museum Store and participate in guided and self-guided tours through the azalea display.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">People visiting Winterthur on Saturday will also be able to enjoy the site\u2019s first-ever outdoor exhibition &#8212; \u201cFollies: Architectural Whimsy in the Garden.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Visitors will have the opportunity to take a stroll through the vibrant colors of the garden and marvel at the architectural wonders of garden follies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Winterthur\u2019s featured exhibition is \u201cCostuming THE CROWN,\u201d featuring 40 iconic costumes from the Emmy\u00ae award-winning Netflix series, a dramatized history of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. This original Winterthur exhibition is on view in the Galleries now through January 5, 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Admission to Winterthur is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and students and $6 for children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Brandywine River Museum (Baltimore Pike, Chadds Ford, 610-388-2700,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandywinemuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.brandywinemuseum.org<\/a>) hosts a number of special events each year. One of the most popular is the annual \u201cMother\u2019s Day Brunch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The well-attended annual event will be held on May 12 at the Museum\u2019s grounds along the banks of the Brandywine Creek in Chadds Ford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Guests can treat their moms to a delicious buffet brunch with a view, then enjoy the museum\u2019s outstanding collection of Wyeth and American art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The event features an elegant brunch buffet with locally sourced American cuisine and a festive Mimosa and Bloody Mary bar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The brunch will run from 9:30 a.m.\u20131:30 p.m. in the Millstone Caf\u00e9. Unusual annuals, new perennial cultivars, fabulous woody plants and heirloom roses will make this Plant Sale one you won\u2019t want to miss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Arboretum staff offer expertise you won\u2019t find anywhere else. Professional horticulturists will be on hand throughout the sale to answer your questions and make recommendations for your home garden. Tickets will be available at the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Yellow Springs Art Show got its start back in 1973 as a free event featuring a variety of artists displaying their work on clotheslines.<\/p>\n<p>It has changed immeasurably since then and has become one of the largest and most prestigious annual art shows in the Delaware Valley.<\/p>\n<p>The Yellow Springs Art Show, which is still free and open to the public, is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. The popular annual event now features more than 185 participating artists &#8212; including more than 20 artists who are new to the show this year.<\/p>\n<p>The show is running April 27 through May 12 in Historic Yellow Springs Lincoln Building (Art School Road, Chester Springs, 610-827-7414 or<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yellowsprings.org\/\">www.yellowsprings.org<\/a>). So, it comes as no surprise that rain showers have already hit on May 9, the event\u2019s opening day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This year, the 99th Annual Wilmington Flower Market returns to Rockford Park (Park Drive, Wilmington, Delaware, 302-995-5699,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wilmingtonflowermarket.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.wilmingtonflowermarket.org<\/a>) for a three-day run from May 9-11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Flower Market, which always runs in conjunction with Mother\u2019s Day, benefits over 50 children\u2019s charities in Delaware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The 2019 Wilmington Flower Market, which is free and open to the public, will be held Friday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">As is the tradition, the event features crafts, booths, rides, food, fun, live entertainment and plenty of flowers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The music line-up also features I See Magic, Megan Knight, Nick Howard, Michael Franti, Nothing but a Nightmare, Cherry Crush, OBB and Andy Grammer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The 2019 Phoenixville Beer &amp; Wine Festival will be held May 11 at Kimberton Fairgrounds (762 Pike Springs Road, Phoenixville, <a href=\"http:\/\/phoenixvillebeerwinefestival.com\/\">phoenixvillebeerwinefestival.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The event, which is scheduled to run from noon-4 p.m., features unlimited sampling of more than 150 beers, wines, ciders, mead and spirits along with a full slate of live music. All the tools and materials will be available at the farm and pet center along the Brandywine Creek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The event, which will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., is free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Another special activity on Saturday will be the Pet Nail Trims from 9-11 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Dog and cat owners are invited to bring their pets in for their nail trims. Nail trims are only $15.99 and no appointment is necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen offers a number of craft fairs throughout the state each year. One of the most popular fairs is scheduled for this weekend. Now through May 12, the Guild will present the Fine Craft Fair (Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, 717-431-8706, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacrafts.org\/\">www.pacrafts.org<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Through a partnership with the\u00a0Friends of Rittenhouse Square\u00a0and in conjunction with the Philadelphia Parks &amp; Recreation, the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen will bring its signature premier Fine Craft Fair to the scenic park in Center City Philadelphia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Founded in 1944 at the recommendation of Eleanor Roosevelt, the Pennsylvania Guild is one of the nation\u2019s largest and most recognized craft guilds, specializing in the advocacy and support of more than 1,400 members whose handwork is known for its unparalleled skill and artistry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Fine craft is often defined as the hand and mind transformation of raw materials into inspired works of art.\u00a0The finished products may be either traditional or contemporary in style and design. This weekend\u2019s event will feature more than 145 of the Guild\u2019s finest craft artists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Fine Craft Fair, which is free and open to the public, will focus on hand-crafted jewelry, contemporary furniture, functional and decorative pottery, designer clothing, fine porcelain, blown glass, limited edition photography, sculpture, paintings, watercolors, oils, graphite and pastels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">There will be 150 white tent canopies lining the sidewalks of Rittenhouse Square\u2019s park when the Guild returns to Philadelphia with its sixth\u00a0juried Fine Craft Market. This year will also include\u00a0an \u201cEmerging Artist\u201d section and a hands-on activity free for all ages, sponsored by the Guild workshop program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Fair hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free. Street and garage parking are readily available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Germantown Second Saturday Festival (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomsbackyard.com\/\">http:\/\/www.freedomsbackyard.com<\/a>) will be held on May 11 from noon-4 p.m. at Historic Market Square Park (Germantown Avenue and School House Lane, Germantown)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Historic Germantown and Germantown United CDC is beginning its 2018 Second Saturday series featuring all 16 Historic Germantown sites, which will be open monthly (May thru October).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The event highlights the many thriving cultural, civic and business activities that make Germantown an exciting place to visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Special attractions at Saturday\u2019s event will be a live music; an arts and crafts marketplace; historic re-enactors, family-friendly programs and free bus and walking tours of Historic Germantown sites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Season Opener will feature special activities at member sites including \u201cPay-What-You-Wish Admission\u201d at all 18 sites, special items on display from the Historic Germantown Archives, extended hours at Awbury Arboretum AdventureWoods Playground and \u201cJuneteenth Themed Activities\u201d at Johnson House.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9529\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lantern-fst.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9529\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9529\" src=\"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lantern-fst-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9529\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chinese Lantern Festival<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Now through June 30, Franklin Square (<a href=\"http:\/\/historicphiladelphia.org\/chineselanternfestival\/\">http:\/\/historicphiladelphia.org\/chineselanternfestival\/<\/a>) will come alive every night with its Chinese Lantern Festival featuring more than two dozen illuminated lanterns \u2013 all constructed by lantern artisans from China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Chinese-inspired performances will take place in Franklin Square twice nightly. Performances, which celebrate Chinese performance art and entertainment, are 30-minutes long and are scheduled for 7 and 9 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Festival hours are 6-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Admission is $18 for adults, $12 for youth, and $15 for seniors and military.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The \u201cOpening Weekend Celebration\u201d at Spruce Street Harbor Park (301 S Christopher Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia, 215-922-2386, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delawareriverwaterfront.com\/\">www.delawareriverwaterfront.com<\/a>)is scheduled for now through May 12 and is free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Named\u00a0one of the best places to\u00a0visit in Philadelphia by national press, Spruce Street Harbor Park features\u00a0colorful hammocks, floating\u00a0gardens, beautiful lights, refreshing craft beer, and\u00a0food from popular Philly restaurants,\u00a0making it\u00a0a summer gathering space for locals and visitors alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">More than 50\u00a0colorful handmade hammocks are strung throughout the park to create a relaxing place to spend summer days and nights. Located in the Marina at Penn\u2019s Landing,\u00a0the Oasis\u00a0consists of three landscaped barges, a net lounge, and floating gardens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">There will be a tightrope and aerial show, live music, a magic show and craft booths by local arts companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Another popular event in this area of the waterfront will get underway this weekend \u2013 \u201cSeafarin\u2019 Saturday\u201d at the Independence Seaport Museum (211 S. Columbus Blvd. Philadelphia, 215-413-8655, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillyseaport.org\/\">www.phillyseaport.org<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The attraction features nautical activities and adventures of distant shores for the whole family. Children will have a variety of options \u2013 from making pirate battle rattles to sailor valentines and a lot more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cSeafarin\u2019 Saturdays\u201d will be held every Saturday inside the Museum from 1:30-3:30 p.m. All activities are free with\u00a0admission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Seafarin&#8217; Saturday this weekend has \u201cMorse Code\u201d as its theme. Volunteers will dress in period clothing to greet and serve guests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">To follow the tradition of the Ironmaster\u2019s family, the event is a \u201clow tea\u201d service. That means the tea service will include the same light fare the ironmaster\u2019s wife would have served to her most important guests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The term \u201clow tea\u201d means guests were seated at a low table, typically in the drawing room or sitting room of an estate.
