{"id":27045,"date":"2018-10-06T10:16:18","date_gmt":"2018-10-06T14:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=27045"},"modified":"2018-10-06T10:16:21","modified_gmt":"2018-10-06T14:16:21","slug":"unionville-holds-off-kennett-10-7-in-nail-biter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=27045","title":{"rendered":"Unionville holds off Kennett 10-7 in nail-biter"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8238\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UHSKennfb-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8238\" class=\"wp-image-8238\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UHSKennfb-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"460\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kennett&#8217;s Sam Forte fires the ball over Unionville&#8217;s Declan Boyle, Friday night.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By Al Tustin<\/strong>, <em>Sports Editor, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">EAST MARLBOROUGH \u2014 Since 2005, when Kennett High School revived its football team, the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>annual matchup with arch rival Unionville has been a one-sided affair, with the Indians winning every game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But while that streak did not end Friday night, the Blue Demons served up notice that the end is near, dropping a 10-7 decision in a key ChesMont American contest in front of a large, rowdy and spirited crowd at Unionville\u2019s Homecoming game.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Both the Indians (3-4, 3-0) and Kennett (2-5, 2-2) used stifling, dominating defense to keep the contest a nail-biter from beginning to end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unionville \u2014 which takes on West Chester Rustin next week in a game that will likely decide the winner of the ChesMont American Division \u2014 recorded a half dozen sacks and spent much of the night tormenting Kennett QB Sam Forte. The Blue Demons were nearly as good, shutting down the Indians\u2019 running game \u2014 other than an 80-yard TD run by senior Nick Schnaars \u2014 and kept them off the scoreboard with turnovers at crucial times.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8239\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UHSkennfb-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8239\" class=\"wp-image-8239\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UHSkennfb-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"514\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8239\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unionville&#8217;s Nick Schnaar&#8217;s looks for running room. Schnaar&#8217;s 80-yard TD run sealed the win for Unionville.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While a clear sign that Kennett is on the verge of competing, Friday\u2019s game came up just short.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m so proud of our kids\u2019 growth,\u201d first-year Kennett Head Coach Lance Frazier said afterward. \u201cThat\u2019s a good football team over there (Unionville), they\u2019re well coached, I told their coach that before the game, I know they\u2019re down because they lost some bodies, but they are a well-coached football team and I told them they are better than their record. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur guys, on the other hand, have been persevering all year long. They\u2019ve been improving, they\u2019ve been finding something within themselves and gaining confidence to do what you saw tonight. Nobody really expected this \u2014 except for our guys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For Unionville, the much-needed win keeps its hopes alive of winning its fourth straight ChesMont American title and of course maintaining an edge on Kennett \u2014 which shares a youth football program with Unionville.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8240\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UHSKennfb-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8240\" class=\"wp-image-8240\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/UHSKennfb-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"463\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dominic Braithwaite kicks what would prove to be a key first-half field goal for Unionville.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is a new chapter to the rivalry,\u201d Unionville Head Coach Pat Clark said. \u201cI have nothing but respect for what Coach Frazier is doing over there, the way they do things. When you look at it, the last two weeks, they haven\u2019t given up very many points. They did some (good) things, coupled with us being inconsistent on offense and luckily, we got the one big play when we did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While the 2018 season as been an on again, off again struggle (although three of Unionville\u2019s losses came at the hands of some of the top programs in southeast Pennsylvania), once again the Rustin game is likely to prove decisive for the conference title. The Knights are coming off a strong win over Oxford, 49-13, Friday night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Still, it was all the Indians could to escape with a win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unionville grabbed the lead in the second quarter, 3-0, on Dominic Braithwaite\u2019s 35-yard field goal \u2014 just a few moments before the senior kicker found himself named homecoming king.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And it stayed that way until the final quarter, when after Zach Lindner missed a 31-yard field goal, Schnaars found running room up the right side on the next play, racing 80 yards for a touchdown, one that proved to be the winner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Blue Demons fought back, driving 44 yards in the closing minutes, with Forte scoring on a one-yard leaping, tumbling dive into the end zone with :38 left in the game.
