WEST CHESTER \u2014 Chester County Detective Ben Martin now will be referred to <\/span>by his colleagues in law enforcement as “Doctor Martin.<\/span>” Detective Martin recently received his Ph.D. <\/span>i<\/span>n <\/span>Leadership from Alvernia University.<\/p>\n

Det. Martin was joined at his graduation by\u00a0his <\/span>father, former Chester County Detective Frank Martin<\/span>. <\/span>Frank Martin was a Chester County Detective for more than 30 years. Ben Martin joined the Chester <\/span>County Detectives two year<\/span>s <\/span>ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Ben Martin putting in the time and effort to get his doctorate is quite an achievement,” Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said. “He jugg<\/span>l<\/span>ed <\/span>his family obligations, work duties, and academics for<\/span> years to reach this<\/span> goal. This is <\/span>another example of how professional and well-rounded law<\/span> enforcement in Chester County has become.”<\/p>\n

Martin for his part, was thankful to all helped him in seeking this advanced degree.<\/p>\n

“I want to thank<\/span> my<\/span> wife, family, and colleagues for supporting me through this process,” Martin said. “Just like <\/span>when we work a m<\/span>urder investigation, achieving a Ph.D. takes <\/span>complete tea<\/span>mwork. <\/span>It helps to be surrounded by great people at home and at work.”<\/p>\n

Det.\u00a0Martin’s doctoral dissertation is titled “A Typology of Police Departments in the <\/span>Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” The dissertation analyzed how the different types of political subdivisions in <\/span>Pennsylvania — <\/span>townships, boroughs, and cities — <\/span>affect the functioning and organization of police departments<\/span>. <\/span>The dissertation reveals that the polit<\/span>i<\/span>cal <\/span>structure surrounding a police department has a complex and distinct impact on local law enforcement. Det.\u00a0Mart<\/span>i<\/span>n<\/span> opened his dissertation by dedicating the work to the men and women of Chester County’ s<\/span> law enforcement community.<\/p>\n

“Ben’s dissertation is a useful primer on the intersection between politics and the police in Pennsylvania,” Hogan said. “It should be required reading for all Pennsylvania politicians.”<\/p>\n

Other members of t<\/span>he <\/span>Chester County Detecti<\/span>ves have master’s degrees, such as Lt. Mike McGinn<\/span>i<\/span>s <\/span>and Sgt. Tom Goggin. However, Ben Martin is the first member of the Chester Coun<\/span>t<\/span>y<\/span> Detectives ever to receive a doctoral degree.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
