{"id":21313,"date":"2017-06-29T09:14:20","date_gmt":"2017-06-29T13:14:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=21313"},"modified":"2017-06-29T09:14:27","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T13:14:27","slug":"on-stage-ccr-is-revisited-without-fogerty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=21313","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: CCR is &#8216;Revisited&#8217; without Fogerty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>By Denny Dyroff<\/b>, <i>Staff Writer, The Times<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4479\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/creedence-clearwater-revisted.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4479\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4479\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/creedence-clearwater-revisted-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Creedence Clearwater Revisited<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Creedence Clearwater Revival was a huge band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The five musicians from the San Francisco Bay area were responsible for a huge number of hits, including classic rock standards such as \u201cProud Mary,\u201d \u201cBorn on the Bayou,\u201d \u201cHave You Ever Seen the Rain?,\u201d \u201cBad Moon Rising,\u201d \u201cWho\u2019ll Stop the Rain?,\u201d and \u201cLookin\u2019 Out My Back Door.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1982, the band dissolved in what was a rock-and-roll version of one of the nastiest divorces you could ever imagine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It immediately became obvious that there would never be a revival of Creedence Clearwater Revival featuring the four original members &#8212; rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, drummer Doug Clifford and guitarist\/vocalist John Fogerty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, a reunion of the four is impossible because Tom Fogerty passed away in 1990 due to complications from back surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And, the possibility of Clifford and Cook reuniting with John Fogerty with amiable results is somewhere between zilch and zero.<br \/>\nFortunately for fans of Creedence Clearwater Revival, the band\u2019s music has been kept alive through Creedence Clearwater Revisted &#8212; a group put together by Cook and Clifford more than 20 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On June 30, Creedence Clearwater Revisted will return to the area for a show at SugarHouse Casino (1001 North Delaware Avenue, Philadelphia, 877-477-3715,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sugarhousecasino.com\/\"><span class=\"s3\">www.sugarhousecasino.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The current quintet features lead guitarist Kurt Griffey, lead singer\/rhythm guitarist Dan McGuiness, multi\u2011instrumentalist Steve Gunner, Cook and Clifford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt kicked in back in 1996,\u201d said Cook, during a recent phone interview from his home in Sarasota, Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDoug and I were hanging around a lot and decided we wanted to do some music. We wanted to play together. And, there had been no live Creedence music in years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t that difficult. We auditioned lead singers, narrowed it to four. The personality just evolved from the players. Staying true to the music was the easy part.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lead guitarist Kurt Griffey brings crowds to their feet and the front of the stage with his solos.\u00a0 He as recorded and toured with other notable musicians including members of the Eagles, Foreigner, the Moody Blues, Wings, Lynyrd Skynryd, Santana and Journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">McGuiness has a powerful voice and a soaring range and Gunner provides musical versatility to the band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cActually, it\u2019s hard to remember what the original Creedence sounded like in concert,\u201d said Cook. \u201cBecause Creedence broke up so early, there was a huge void for live performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCreedence was nine-and-a-half years in the making and three-and-a-half years touring.\u00a0 But, we\u2019ve never forgotten what the records sounded like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When fans hear Creedence Clearwater Revisited play, Creedence music is what they get &#8212; 100 per cent Creedence Clearwater Revival music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never made any new music with this band,\u201d said Cook. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to and we don\u2019t want to. The show has pretty much been dialed in by the fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe have what the fans want &#8212; Creedence music. They come for the experience. We never get tired of playing Creedence music. We\u2019re blessed \u2013 or cursed \u2013 by having too many good songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe find that it\u2019s best to focus on the most popular stuff. We keep it simple. And, in a lot of cases, we nail it just as good as Creedence Clearwater Revival did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur audience ranges from eight to 80 \u2013 and it gets younger all the time. We have probably the broadest demographic of any band in America. As we lose fans from my generation, we gain them from the grandkids\u2019 generation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Creedence songs may be old but for the members of Creedence Clearwater Revisited, playing them never gets old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTo keep it fresh, you just have to have the right attitude,\u201d said Cook. \u201cYou have to have pride. You have to do the best you can. We just go out and have a good time \u2013 and so does the audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Video link for Creedence Clearwater Revisited \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HjuXin4iEXc\"><span class=\"s3\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/HjuXin4iEXc<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show at SugarHouse Casino will start at 9 p.m. Tickets are $49, $59 and $69.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4480\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Wreck-Loose.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4480\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4480\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Wreck-Loose-350x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wreck Loose<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Homophones are words that sound alike but have different meanings and different spellings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An example of this is the following trio of words \u2013 wreckloose, recluse and Wreck Loose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s4\">A \u201cwreckloose\u201d is described as that <\/span><span class=\"s1\">person at the party who takes it way too far \u2013 one who is more than likely to make trouble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A \u201crecluse\u201d is defined as a person who lives a solitary life and tends to avoid other people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWreck Loose\u201d is a piano-rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that will be in the area on June 29 for a show at Bourbon and Branch (705 North Second Street, Philadelphia, 215-238-0660, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bourbonandbranchphilly.com\/\"><span class=\"s3\">www.bourbonandbranchphilly.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Formed in 2013, Wreck Loose features songwriter Max Somerville, guitarist Nathan Zoob, drummer Derek Krystek and bassist Dave Busch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band just released its debut album \u201cOK, Wreck Loose\u201d and will tour nationwide in support of the record throughout June and July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re in the van heading from Pittsburgh to Baltimore to play the opening show of the tour,\u201d said Somerville, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is our first outing since the album dropped on June 16. We had a big release party on the 16th here in Pittsburgh at James Street Gastropub &amp; Speakeasy. It was a packed house.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wreck Loose has already built a large and devoted following in the \u201cCity of Bridges.\u201d (Because of its location at the confluence of the Allegheny, Ohio, and Monongahela rivers, Pittsburgh has more bridges than any other American city or region.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur band has been together four years,\u201d said Somerville. \u201cWe had been playing for different bands in the Pittsburgh music scene and had known each other for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur bass player Dave and I were in a band called Backstabbing Good People. The first official Wreck Loose show was in May of 2013 at Garfield Art Works in Pittsburgh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAround that time, we recorded \u2018Well,\u2019 our first EP. After that, we released a few singles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe spent a lot of time working on the new album \u2013 more than two years. It\u2019s our first full-length and it\u2019s pretty good. These are songs we\u2019ve been working on for years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Much to the delight of both the band and its fans, the debut record has finally seen the light of day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe album was recorded at Tree Lake Studio in Turtle Creek. Between recording, mixing and overdubbing, we were in the studio for about a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe changed things a bit with making the album,\u201d said Somerville. \u201cBefore this project, we recorded everything live in the studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis time, we did it in layers. We wanted a polished record \u2013 a record that was well-produced. We got that with Dave Hidek who did the production and engineering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wreck Loose has built a solid fan base with its distinct style of piano-based garage rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur audiences are a mix of everyone \u2013 but mostly 18-30 age group,\u201d said Somerville. \u201cWe have wide appeal because we write songs that are poppy \u2013 pop, songwriter, jam and funk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur influences as far as piano rockers are Ben Folds and Elton John. Overall, I\u2019d say our sound is a blend of classic rock and indie-pop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn our live shows, we play everything in our whole catalog. We love every single song we\u2019ve written.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Video link for Wreck Loose &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/A92YCeaRwh0\"><span class=\"s3\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/A92YCeaRwh0<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show at Bourbon and Branch, which also features Sixteen Jackies and Lady HD, will start at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4481\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/revocation.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4481\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4481\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/revocation-350x233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Revocation<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other upcoming shows at Bourbon and Branch are Soraia, Tubey Frank and Jackson Howard on June 30 and Fast Lane, Hobb$, Rich AB, Havana Seoul, Jus O, and Vars City on July 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Revocation, a powerful metal band from Boston, released its most recent album \u201cGreat Is Our Sin\u201d last July on Metal Blade Records and had been touring almost non-stop ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On June 30, the band will hit Philly for a show at Kung Fu Necktie (1248 North Front Street, Philadelphia, 215-291-4919, <a href=\"http:\/\/kungfunecktie.com\/\"><span class=\"s3\">kungfunecktie.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The hard-edged technical quartet &#8212; David Davidson, lead vocals, guitars; Dan Gargiulo, guitars, backing vocals; Brett Bamberger, bass, backing vocals; and Ash Pearson, drums &#8212; played a full USA tour with Morbid Angel, Suffocation, and Withered in May and June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe just finished the Morbid Angel leg,\u201d said Bamberger, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon as the band traveled to a show in Richmond, Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe do three more shows opening for Suffocation and then we pack this up. We\u2019ll headline shows in Canada in July and then head to Europe for some festivals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018Great Is Our Sin\u2019 in February 2015. We worked on the songs ahead of time. It\u2019s the way we always do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe all live in different cities now. I\u2019m in Richmond, Virginia. Ash is in Canada \u2013 in Vancouver. Dave is still in Boston and Dan is in New York \u2013 in Long Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSo, Dave and I cut the songs and send them out to the others. By the time we hit the studio, everything is 90 per cent ready to go. Usually, we\u2019re in the studio for about a month to make a record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After releasing their sixth full-length, \u201cGreat Is Our Sin,\u201d to critical acclaim last year, Revocation has also been featured in the new \u201cPower Rangers\u201d movie with the track \u201cCommunion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen making the new album, we wanted to get a little weirder \u2013 and everybody got a little more tech,\u201d said Bamberger. \u201cIt\u2019s a sound that we\u2019ve been working on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is the first album we\u2019ve done where we can play all of it live. We really fell in love with it. It was a very cohesive effort. The lyrical content fits together well and the material is cohesive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith each release, the band has developed and matured. This album is us as players. A lot of the solos are the best solos the guys have ever played.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNow, we\u2019re ready to start on the next album. We have studio time booked and we\u2019re ready to record. But, in our live show now, we\u2019re playing only songs from our last two albums \u2013 \u2018Deathless\u2019 and \u2018Great Is Our Sin.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe only had a 30-minute set with Morbid and now a 45-minute set with Suffocation.
