{"id":20796,"date":"2017-05-25T09:22:22","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T13:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=20796"},"modified":"2017-05-25T09:22:23","modified_gmt":"2017-05-25T13:22:23","slug":"two-recovery-counselors-found-dead-of-apparent-od","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=20796","title":{"rendered":"Two recovery counselors found dead of apparent OD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_4152\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Nightstand.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4152\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4152\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Nightstand-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The nightstand of one of the two overdoese victims, including apparent baggies of heroin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Two recovery counselors at a West Brandywine addiction recovery group home were found unresponsive and ultimately died from an apparent overdose of heroin and fentanyl, Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8220;If <\/span>anybody is wondering how bad the opioid epidemic has become, this case is a frightening example,&#8221; Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said. &#8220;The staff members in charge of supervising recovering <span class=\"s1\">addicts <\/span>succumbed to their own addiction and died of opioid overdoses. Opioids are a monster that is slowly consuming our population.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Emergency responders were called to the facility, Freedom Recovery, located in a home at about\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">2:15 p.m<\/span>. after residents found both counselors in separate bedrooms unresponsive. The residents attempted to revive\u00a0one of them with a nasal injection naloxone, but were unsuccessful and then called emergency personnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Both counselors \u2014 who were not identified by authorities \u2014 were pronounced dead at the <span class=\"s14\">scene<\/span><span class=\"s15\">. <\/span>In the bedrooms<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of both <span class=\"s8\">counselors<\/span><span class=\"s16\">, <\/span>the police located used needles and heroin baggies near their bodies. The baggies were stamped with a <span class=\"s16\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"s8\">Superman<\/span><span class=\"s16\">&#8221; <\/span>logo and &#8220;Danger <span class=\"s4\">\/<\/span>Skull &amp; <span class=\"s17\">Crossbones<\/span><span class=\"s18\">&#8221; <\/span><span class=\"s8\">logo<\/span><span class=\"s16\">.<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0<\/span>Preliminary toxicology tests for each of the deceased were positive for heroin and fentanyl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The facility is a private <span class=\"s1\">residence <\/span>that <span class=\"s1\">is <\/span>used as a group home or halfway house for individuals struggling with addiction. <span class=\"s1\">Two <\/span>people worked <span class=\"s1\">and <\/span>lived at the home as on-site counselors. <span class=\"s1\">Six <\/span>men resided at the halfway house as part of their recovery. The counselors&#8217; duties included establishing daily activities for the <span class=\"s1\">residents <\/span>and keeping appropriate medications for <span class=\"s1\">the <\/span>residents under lock-and-key.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\n<p class=\"p11\"><span class=\"s4\">&#8220;<\/span>These deaths are tragic examples of the impact that the heroin and opioid epidemic continues to have on our communities,&#8221; Vince Brown<span class=\"s4\">, <\/span>Director of the Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol, said. &#8220;Nobody is immune. But it is important to know that help is available and that recovery<span class=\"s21\">, <\/span>from any addiction, is possible and happens every day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\">Hogan warned that people should stay away from and not even touch the two types of heroin baggies found at the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p14\"><span class=\"s4\">&#8220;<\/span>Anybody who sees baggies in the area <span class=\"s14\">w<\/span><span class=\"s15\">i<\/span><span class=\"s14\">th <\/span>the Superman or Danger logo must be warned to stay away from those <span class=\"s14\">drugs,&#8221; Hogan said<\/span><span class=\"s15\">.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0&#8220;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s23\">The<\/span><span class=\"s26\">y <\/span>appear to be heroin laced with fentanyl and are likely to kill anybody who uses <span class=\"s23\">them<\/span><span class=\"s27\">. <\/span>We will not even let law enforcement handle them without special precautions because of the extreme danger of death or <span class=\"s17\">injury.<\/span><span class=\"s18\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\">This case is being investigated by the Chester County Detectives and West Brandywine Police Department.
