The course &#8211; Pumper\/Driver Operator \u2013 is one that Brown knows well.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"http:\/\/coatesvilletimes.com\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><!--more-->Brown, who retired in 2000 from Bethlehem Steel, has worked actively as a firefighter since 1956 and still serves as a driver\/operator for the Union Fire Company in Oxford.\u00a0 He became an instructor in 1968. He is a nationally- certified Fire Service Instructor I and nationally-certified Fire Firefighter I.\u00a0 In 2000, he was honored as\u00a0 \u201cKeystone Educator of the Year,\u201d county officials said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_188\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Image-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-188 \" style=\"border-width: 2px; border-color: black; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Image 9\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Image-9-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instructor Lonnie Brown is eager to impart the wisdom he&#8217;s gleaned during 56 years of firefighting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When he\u2019s not fighting fires or teaching safety instruction, Brown lives\u00a0 with his wife, Jane, in Oxford; they have 3 sons and 5 grandchildren, two of whom are fifth-generation firefighters.\u00a0 The strength of the firefighting gene should come as no surprise: Brown\u2019s wife was one of\u00a0 the first active women firefighters in Oxford.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview, Brown said he was thrilled that Chester County no longer lagged behind other counties by not having its own training facility, a shortcoming that sometimes forced emergency responders to rely on piecemeal, makeshift conditions. \u201cHuman life is equally important everywhere,\u201d he said, adding that the new facility will improve the county\u2019s ability to keep responders and citizens safe.<\/p>\n<p>The second phase of the 95-acre campus will involve the construction of a four-acre tactical village, enabling responders to hone rescue skills in realistic surroundings such as trenches or sloping roadways.
