{"id":16886,"date":"2016-09-16T10:38:35","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T14:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=16886"},"modified":"2016-09-16T10:38:36","modified_gmt":"2016-09-16T14:38:36","slug":"coatesville-pd-to-focus-on-child-car-seat-safety-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=16886","title":{"rendered":"Coatesville PD to focus on child car seat safety this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1768\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Babycartseat-300x269.jpg\" alt=\"babycartseat\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" \/>COATESVILLE \u2014 As part of National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week, which runs from September 18 through 24, the City of Coatesville Police Department, Buckle Up PA, and the PA Traffic Injury Prevention Project\u00a0announced this week they will partner in an enforcement mobilization to help reduce child injuries and fatalities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The mobilization will take place from September 18 through 30, 2016, and will also highlight National Seat Check Saturday<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>on September<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>24.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Vehicle<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>crashes<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>continue<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>be<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>leading<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>cause<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>death<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>for<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>According<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration every 33 seconds, one child under 13 is involved in a crash. On average in 2014, nearly two children under 13 years old were killed and 308 were injured every day as passengers in car crashes. These crashes are a leading cause of death for children in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Motorists are reminded that Pennsylvania&#8217;s primary seat-belt law requires drivers and passengers under 18 years old to buckle up, and children under the age of 4 must be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\">Children ages 4 to 8 must be restrained in an appropriate booster seat. A new law that went into effect August 2016 requires a child under 2 years of age be securely fastened in a rear-facing child passenger restraint system, which is to be used until the child outgrows<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>maximum weight<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>limits designated by the manufacturer. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In addition,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>children ages 8 to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>18 must be wearing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>a seat belt when riding<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>anywhere in the vehicle. Also, drivers and front-seat<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>passengers<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>18 years-old or older are required to buckle up. If motorists are stopped for a traffic violation<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and are not <span class=\"s1\">wearing <\/span>their seat belt, they can<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>receive<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>a second ticket<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and second fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\">The City of Coatesville Police Department will join other departments<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and highway safety<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>partners across<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the state to provide child passenger safety information, presentations, provide fitting stations and, <span class=\"s1\">if <\/span>necessary, write citations.
