{"id":13926,"date":"2016-04-01T08:46:57","date_gmt":"2016-04-01T12:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=13926"},"modified":"2016-04-01T08:46:57","modified_gmt":"2016-04-01T12:46:57","slug":"coatesville-native-keeps-the-navys-newest-helicopters-flying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chescotimes.com\/?p=13926","title":{"rendered":"Coatesville native keeps the Navy\u2019s newest helicopters flying"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1323476\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Kennedy-300x242.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1323476\" class=\"wp-image-1323476 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/chescotimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Kennedy-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"Kennedy\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1323476\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chris Kennedy, a 2005 Coatesville Area high School graduate, serves as an aviation electrician&#8217;s mate with the \u201cGrandmasters\u201d of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 46.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">MAYPORT, Fla. \u2013 A 2005 Coatesville Area High School graduate and local\u00a0native is serving with a U.S. Navy helicopter squadron that flies the Navy\u2019s newest and most technologically-advanced helicopter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Petty Officer 2nd Class Chris Kennedy is an aviation electrician&#8217;s mate with the \u201cGrandmasters\u201d of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 46, a Mayport, Florida based squadron that operates the Navy\u2019s next generation submarine hunter and anti-surface warfare helicopter, the MH-60R Seahawk. Each helicopter is nearly 65 feet long, may weigh up to 23,500 lbs. (max gross) and can travel over 120 miles per hour for nearly 320 miles on a tank of gas.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As an aviation electrician&#8217;s mate, Kennedy is responsible for the auto pilot components of helicopters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt&#8217;s a very exciting job that I get to do day to day,\u201d said Kennedy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to Navy officials, the MH-60R is the most capable multi-mission helicopter available in the world today. It is used for a variety of missions, including hunting and tracking enemy submarines, attacking enemy ships, search and rescue, drug interdiction, delivering supplies and supporting the Navy\u2019s special operations forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is replacing the Navy\u2019s older helicopters because of its greater versatility and more advanced weapon systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Kennedy said they and other HSM-46 sailors are proud to be part of a warfighting team that readily defends America at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is one of the best commands in the Navy in terms of people who hold a standard well above anything else,\u201d said Kennedy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sailors\u2019 jobs are highly varied within the squadron. Approximately 270 Navy men and women are assigned and keep all parts of the squadron running smoothly. \u00a0This includes everything from maintaining helicopter airframes and engines, to processing paperwork, handling weapons and flying the aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe mission of HSM-46 is to embark and deploy combat-ready helicopter detachments around the world.
