KENNETT SQUARE —  The 14th Annual Martin Luther King Junior CommUNITY Breakfast will be held at the Red Clay Room, Dalmatian Street, Kennett Square on Monday, January 19, 2014 at 8:00 AM.  “The mission of the Martin Luther King CommUNITY Breakfast is to promote peace and harmony throughout our community,” according to Jerry Poe, Chairman of the organizing committee.  The theme for this year’s event is “Jusitice”.  The 2015 keynote speaker will be Dr. Marjorie G. Adams, Professor at Morgan State University in Baltimore, speaking to the past, future, and ongoing issues of justice in our world.

Tickets for the event are $15.00 and are available online at http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=unhmmecab&oeidk=a07ea5jbi4p525cf232 and also may be obtained by calling the United Way of Southern Chester County office at (610) 444-4357 or emailing mlkjrbreakfast@verizon.net.  Tickets must be purchased in advance and the event typically sells out quickly.

The MLK CommUNITY Breakfast was originally founded by the late Mabel Thompson.  The event has become the catalyst for several other community activities to highlight the Martin Luther King Day of Sharing.  The MLK Day of Sharing honors Dr. King’s ideals by engaging the community in service to others.  On Monday, January 19th, volunteers will work to support projects at various non-profit venues throughout the area.  Community members interested in participating should e-mail mlkdayofsharing@gmail.com.

During the month of January,  a CommUNITY Food Drive in support of the Kennett Area Food Cupboard encourages the donation of non-perishable food items.  Donations may be brought to the January 19th Breakfast or dropped off at Kennett, Unionville-Chadds Ford, or Avon Grove schools prior to January 17th.  Coordination for the seventh annual food drive is being handled by Dori Roper and Ginny Levy and will culminate with a community celebration at 6:00 pm at the Kennett Food Cupboard to unload the tractor trailer truck provided by Phillips Mushroom Company.  For more information on the food drive, email mlkfooddrive@gmail.com.
