WEST CHESTER — The Chester County District Attorney’s Office (the “DAO”) is presenting a program on school shootings to parents and teachers throughout Chester County. The Chester County school districts are coordinating with the DAO on this program. The next school shootings presentation is at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at West Chester East High School.

The school shootings program is presented by District Attorney Tom Hogan and Downingtown Police Department Detective Andy Trautmann. District Attorney Hogan has extensive experience in dealing with domestic terrorism as a federal prosecutor. Detective Trautmann is both a SWAT commander and a former school resource officer, giving him a unique perspective on the issue of school shootings. Both District Attorney Hogan and Detective Trautmann have studied hundreds of active shooter incidents from around the world.

The school shootings presentation covers a number of important topics, including:

  • Possible causes of school shootings
  • Firearms used in school shootings
  • Increasing frequency of school shootings
  • The evolution stages of a school shooter
  • Advice for preventing and responding to school shootings

District Attorney Hogan stated, “School shootings are a grim and frightening aspect of modem life. Rather than duck the issue and hope it never happens here, Chester County law enforcement has twin goals: (1) prevent the attacks from happening; and (2) be prepared if a school shooting happens. These presentations serve both goals. Parents and teachers can help us both prevent and react to school shootings.”

Detective Trautmann added, “Chester County law enforcement works diligently to prevent and prepare for school shootings.” Detective Trautmann added. “These presentations are a chance both to educate and enlist the help of parents and teachers.
