SOMERSET, NJ – Wagner College softball standout Brianna Tredway of Downingtown was named Northeast Conference (NEC) Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Tredway’s honor marks the fifth straight year that a Wagner student-athlete has been the recipient of this award, as she joins former football standouts Steven Ciocci (2012-13) and Phil Faccone (2014-2015) and former swimmers Meredith Ketchmark (2013-14) and Amanda Lucia (2015-16) as recent winners of the award.
“Brianna epitomizes what we strive for at Wagner and within the Northeast Conference (NEC),” said Seahawk Athletic Director Walt Hameline. “She excelled in academics, athletics, and the community while representing our institution with a positive attitude. It’s an honor to have a Wagner student-athlete awarded for the fifth consecutive year and truly a testament to our student-athletes’ dedication and also the support of great coaches, faculty, and administrators.”
On the softball field, Tredway was a major part of the Seahawks’ most successful season in 10 years, as the Green and White made it all the way to the 2017 NEC Tournament’s championship series.
The Downingtown native was the NEC’s regular season batting champion with a .402 average during the regular season, finishing conference play with a league-best .440 mark, which ranked 63rd in the NCAA. Over the span of 16 league games, the senior had 22 hits and 11 RBIs.
“We are so excited for Bri to win this award at the conclusion of her fantastic Seahawk career,” commented head softball coach Angie Churchill. “Her dedication in the classroom, on the field, and in the community made her a great player to coach and someone our younger players could look up to. Her passion and success show what our program and this sport is all about. I’m looking forward to seeing what great accomplishments her future has in store.”
In the postseason, Tredway was named to the NEC All-Tournament team after collecting four hits and six RBIs during the championship weekend, including the game-winning three-run home run that lifted the Green and White past Sacred Heart and into the championship series.
Tredway finished her career with 71 RBIs on 175 hits, 37 doubles, and a .319 career average, en route to being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, All-NEC First Team, and NFCA All-Region Second Team.
Off the field, Tredway graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.79 GPA, majoring in Psychology and Childhood/Special Education, while being a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (Leadership Society), Kappa Delta Pi (Education Leadership Society) and Psy Chi (Psychology Leadership Society), in addition to being the recipient of the Education Department’s Chair Award-Distinction in Teaching and Outstanding Senior Academic Achievement Award.
In the community, Tredway joined her teammates in volunteering for the annual Tunnel to Towers 5k race, the Staten Island Zoo, Staten Island Children’s Museum, and the Autism Speaks Walk. During the summer, Tredway also spent over 2,000 hours working as a unit counselor at Dragonfly Forest in Valley Forge and over 720 hours as a unit leader at Camp Tall Tree in Ann Arbor, MI.
The recent graduate also represented the softball team as an active participant of Wagner’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) to help organize charity events such as the Players vs. Coaches Basketball Charity game for Children’s Cancer.
