Mushroom Drop fun planned for all on New Year’s Eve

mushroomdropKENNETT SQUARE — At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, in the heart of Kennett Square, The Mushroom – a 500 pound stainless steel mushroom glittering with thousands of lights — will be lowered with a countdown to the new year. It is the finale of Midnight in the Square, Kennett Square’s family-style New Year’s Eve bash with music, food and fun.

The star of the show is The Mushroom. Come early to see it up close. The Mushroom, in all it’s twinkling glory, dangles near the ground prior to its being raised at 8 pm. Entertainment around The Mushroom includes dance troupes, singers, and other entertainers. At The Garage, Characters with Character will entertain the kids from 6 to 8 pm. with music, balloon sculptures and caricatures. A laser light show runs continually adding a new dimension to Kennett Square on New Year’s Eve.

The Raising of The Mushroom occurs around 8pm. It is a great way for youngsters and those earlier-to-bedders to experience the Mushroom Drop as The Mushroom ascends to the sky to await its midnight countdown.

Enjoying the rocking sounds of The Funsters on the Main Stage starting at 9 pm. There’s plenty of singing and dancing while they are on the stage. Join the Funsters and the crowds in singing “Sweet Caroline” just before the midnight countdown.

New this year: The Mushroom Drop Party @ The Garage. Gather your friends and family and plan on partying the evening away just feet away from the Mushroom Drop and the main music stage. The Mushroom Drop Party features a heated space with food and beverages available for purchase by Kennett Brewing Company. The $10 cover charge includes access to The Garage all evening, and New Year’s Eve hats and noisemakers.

General admission for this great New Year’s celebration is a nonperishable food item for the Kennett Food Cupboard.

Bob’s Crane Services will once again lower the Mushroom into the center of town.

Parking is available at the Exelon parking lot and Kennett High School. Free shuttle buses will bring guests from these parking lots to Broad and State Street and return guests from this location to their cars after the Mushroom Drop.

Alcohol is not permitted on the streets. Please do not bring any glass containers to the event.

The event is a joint venture of the Kennett Area Restaurant and Merchants Association and the Mushroom Festival, Inc.
