Willard C. Gibson

Willard C. Gibson, 85, of Wyomissing passed away Sunday at his home while being cared for and comforted by his family.

Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on August 29, 1930 he was the son of the late Edward Albert and Addie (Burnham) Gibson.

Willard served in the United States Navy during the Korean War Era on the submarine USS Sea Leopard as an electriciansmate.

He was married to his beautiful bride Nancy McFalls for sixty years.

Willard graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and then went on to Rutgers University and received a degree in Mathematics.

Willard was a Senior Engineer for Bell Laboratories where he worked from 1954 until his retirement in 1989.  He worked on cutting edge technologies including designs for the guidance systems of Tel Star and components of the Apollo missions.  He had a part in developing many patents that are still used to this day.

He was instrumental in the success behind Bell Tower Salon and Spa; purchasing the original building on North 5th Street back in 1989.  Willard was a constant fixture at Bell Tower handling business operations and finances. ‘Mr. G’ was well-loved by Bell Tower staff and guests alike. During his walks in later years, he always stopped by for his smoothie and conversation.

Willard loved the outdoors; especially walking and tending to his garden. Always loving a new adventure, he celebrated his 70th birthday by skydiving.  He was an avid reader and loved to travel.  He was tirelessly dedicated to his family and community.  He was often seen walking Penn Avenue where he would talk with his neighbors or look for a new friend he hadn’t yet met. He was a member of Cumru Lions Club, coached baseball and was the founder of the Over the Hill Gang Investment Club.  Willard will be remembered for his love of life and great sense of humor.

In addition to his parents, Willard is preceded in death by seven siblings.

In addition to his wife Nancy, Willard is survived by his sister LeVirt Pero and his children; Allen E. Gibson husband of Mary Jo, Mohnton, Robin K. Schappell wife of Scott, Leesport; Carolyn E. Helms wife of Darrell, Bernville and Michael S. Gibson husband to Melissa Shrewsbury, NJ.  He is also survived by grandchildren Lindsay, Aaron, Jordan, Carolyn, Jessica, Remi, Matthew, and Carter and great-grandchildren Teddy, Jaida, Bryce, Kaiden, and Cameron.
